49ers offensive tackle Anthony Davis is stepping away from the NFL

The hits keep coming for the San Francisco 49ers.

After Patrick Willis, Chris Borland and Justin Smith all announced their retirements from the NFL earlier this offseason, comes this news from ESPN’s Adam Schefter indicating that the team’s starting right tackle, Anthony Davis, has decided to step away from the game.

Davis had this to say about his decision in a prepared statement:

Davis, 25, started all 16 games in each of his first four seasons in the NFL before missing nine games this past season with a knee injury.

Davis was in the middle of a five-year, $33.2 million dollar contract extension he signed with the team back in 2013. He posted on Twitter:

While Davis did indicate he might return after one season away from the game, it sure looks like he’s giving up the game of football.

The 49ers, who have yet to release a statement on the decision, have now lost 10 starters from a season ago since the start of the new league year in March.
