2017 NFL Mock Draft: Quarterback Plunge Alters Entire Board

This 2017 NFL mock draft will be the first of the new year that has the entire draft order set in stone following the outcome of Super Bowl LI.
Still, the true intentions of several teams remain in the dark due to the scouting combine and free agency not yet having passed. Even so it is starting to crystallize in terms of likely maneuvers that can happen in a couple months. The major players are pretty much locked in. Teams that have extra high picks that will likely do most of the maneuvering whenever the opportunity arises. It should make for an interesting early couple days.
1. Cleveland Browns
1
Myles Garrett
DE, Texas A&M
This is why Myles Garrett remains the top pick. He is the best player on the board and nobody has surfaced to challenge that fact. He’s a gifted pass rusher with size, speed, athleticism and burst. When his motor is running there isn’t a blocker on the field who can stop him. It really doesn’t matter what scheme he’s in. He’ll find a way to do his job, which is wreak havoc on the opposing backfield.

2. San Francisco 49ers
2
Solomon Thomas
DE, Stanford
Turns out beating up on one of the top QB prospects in a bowl game tends to get a man noticed. Solomon Thomas was already a rising prospect before that, but now he’s skyrocketing. For good reason too. The Stanford defensive lineman is an unrelenting 280 lbs ball of terror. Blockers have to fight it out with him for 60 minutes every week and often end up losing more than a handful of those bouts. His violent hands and lower body strength make blocking him a chore.
Dec 31, 2016; Atlanta, GA, USA; Alabama Crimson Tide defensive lineman Jonathan Allen (93) walks on the field during the first quarter in the 2016 CFP Semifinal against the Washington Huskies at the Georgia Dome. Mandatory Credit: Jason Getz-USA TODAY Sports
3. Chicago Bears
3
Jonathan Allen
DE, Alabama
Jonathan Allen sometimes gets lost on what is a talent-laden defense at Alabama. Yet he’s been the spoon that stirs the drink in each of their national championship runs the past two years. Not only does he provide the strong anchor against the run, his surprising mix of quickness and lateral agility have allowed him to become an effective pass rusher as well. He can play inside or outside and commands consistent attention from double teams. The Bears are instantly a better defense with him on board.

4. San Diego Chargers (via JAX)
4
Malik Hooker
FS, Ohio State
That is why they jump up in the draft to grab Malik Hooker. This young man is one of the most impressive talents seen at that safety position in years. Such a naturally gifted ball hawk who claimed seven interceptions and three defensive touchdowns in his first year as a starter for Ohio State. His size and athleticism stand out almost immediately. He’s only going to get better with more experience.
Nov 19, 2016; Winston-Salem, NC, USA; Clemson Tigers wide receiver Mike Williams (7) runs after a catch in the first quarter against the Wake Forest Demon Deacons at BB&T Field. Mandatory Credit: Jeremy Brevard-USA TODAY Sports
5. Tennessee Titans
5
Mike Williams
WR, Clemson
Mike Williams cemented his status as the best in the 2017 class with his outstanding performance in the national championship against Alabama. Without his huge catches down the stretch, there is no way Clemson wins that game. His mixture of size, explosive and strong hands makes him so hard to cover even when the defensive back has him blanketed. Put him in a better scheme to help him get open and it gets better.
Dec 31, 2016; Atlanta, GA, USA; Alabama Crimson Tide linebacker Reuben Foster (10) at the line of scrimmage during the first quarter in the 2016 CFP Semifinal against the Washington Huskies at the Georgia Dome. Mandatory Credit: Jason Getz-USA TODAY Sports
6. New York Jets
6
Reuben Foster
ILB, Alabama
Inside linebacker may not seem like the most immediate need, but sometimes the talent trumps such things. Reuben Foster is one of those rare special exceptions. The Alabama product proved how good he was in the national championship game, flying all over the field making tackles and delivering big hits. Wherever the ball went, it always seemed like he was there to make a play on it. This is the kind of player the Jets want at the heart of their defense.
Oct 15, 2016; Baton Rouge, LA, USA; LSU Tigers safety Jamal Adams (33) celebrates after picking up a fumble during the third quarter of a game against the Southern Miss Golden Eagles at Tiger Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Derick E. Hingle-USA TODAY Sports
7. Jacksonville Jaguars (via SD)
7
Jamal Adams
SS, LSU
This 2017 class is loaded at safety and some will argue Jamal Adams is the best of the bunch. The reason being he’s the most well-rounded. A big, strong safety who excels around the line of scrimmage as a tackler and hitter. This belies his value at sniffing out what the offense is about to do, demonstrating excellent instinct. He’s also a better athlete than he gets credit for, regularly able to cover tight ends or running backs on pass plays.
Sep 24, 2016; Auburn, AL, USA; LSU Tigers running back Leonard Fournette (7) carries against the Auburn Tigers during the first quarter at Jordan Hare Stadium. Mandatory Credit: John Reed-USA TODAY Sports
8. Carolina Panthers
8
Leonard Fournette
RB, LSU
Carolina needs a running back who can handle heavy loads and ease the burden on Newton. Leonard Fournette is the type of talent that doesn’t come around often. Big, strong, fast, nimble and hard to get on the ground once he has a full head of steam. He was a monster at LSU even when opponents were allowed to focus on him. Imagine what will happen when he has an All-Pro quarterback in the same backfield.
Jan 1, 2016; Tampa, FL, USA; Tennessee Volunteers defensive end Derek Barnett (9) rushes past Northwestern Wildcats offensive lineman Eric Olson (76) during the first half in the 2016 Outback Bowl at Raymond James Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports
9. Cincinnati Bengals
9
Derek Barnett
DE, Tennessee
They have Geno Atkins and Carlos Dunlap in place but the Bengals front isn’t quite at elite territory yet. Finding another edge rusher who will force blockers to adjust is a major key. Derek Barnett is just what they’re looking for. The Tennessee defensive end was a monster in the SEC for three years, breaking his school record with 33 sacks. That’s more than Reggie White had. He a naturally gifted pass rusher who does his entire job well.
December 31, 2016; Glendale, AZ, USA; Ohio State Buckeyes cornerback Marshon Lattimore (2) tackles Clemson Tigers quarterback Deshaun Watson (4) in the 2016 CFP semifinal at University of Phoenix Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports
10. Buffalo Bills
10
Marshon Lattimore
CB, Ohio State
Lucky for them this draft is ready to oblige. Marshon Lattimore proved again that Ohio State is one of the top producers of defensive backs in the country. He’s got the desired size, athleticism and smooth mechanics that allow him to play consistent, tight coverage. He’s also not afraid to stick his nose in defending the ground attack either. He’ll make a nice compliment to Ronald Darby.
Sep 24, 2016; Chapel Hill, NC, USA; North Carolina Tar Heels quarterback Mitch Trubisky (10) during the game against the Pittsburgh Panthers at Kenan Memorial Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Jeremy Brevard-USA TODAY Sports
11. New Orleans Saints
11
Mitch Trubisky
QB, North Carolina
How perfect then that he’s able to land with the New Orleans Saints. Drew Brees remains the entrenched starter after another excellent season, but as he approaches the age of 40, his time is running out. The Saints have quietly searched for his potential successor the past few years. This represented their biggest opportunity to date. Trubisky is just the kind of talent they need to sit on the bench and learn, preparing for the passing of the torch.
Nov 26, 2016; Clemson, SC, USA; Clemson Tigers quarterback Deshaun Watson (4) during the fourth quarter against the South Carolina Gamecocks at Clemson Memorial Stadium. Tigers won 56-7. Mandatory Credit: Joshua S. Kelly-USA TODAY Sports
12. Cleveland Browns (via PHI)
12
Deshaun Watson
QB, Clemson
Leading is something Deshaun Watson knows a lot about. He guided Clemson through back-to-back national championship appearances and crowned his tremendous college career with a title victory over Alabama. He’s athletic, intelligent and makes big plays happens. Throw in a massive amount of leadership and that sounds like the makings of an NFL starter. Word is the Browns have really liked him. Now they get to find out why.
Sep 17, 2016; South Bend, IN, USA; Notre Dame Fighting Irish quarterback DeShone Kizer (14) takes the snap of the ball from Notre Dame Fighting Irish offensive lineman Sam Mustipher (not pictured) during the first quarter of a game against Michigan State at Notre Dame Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Mike Carter-USA TODAY Sports
13. Arizona Cardinals
13
Deshone Kizer
QB, Notre Dame
Lucky for them the board bounces their way. Deshone Kizer embodies the type of quarterback Bruce Arians loves: big, tough, strong arm and deep accuracy. The Cardinals run an offense designed around attack defenses with the big play. Kizer isn’t quite ready with his fundamental development but his talent fits their style in almost every facet. Not to mention he’d bring the added dimension of mobility, which Palmer has not.
Dec 31, 2016; Atlanta, GA, USA; Alabama Crimson Tide linebacker Tim Williams (56) during the first quarter of the 2016 CFP Semifinal against the Washington Huskies at the Georgia Dome. Alabama defeated Washington 24-7. Mandatory Credit: Jason Getz-USA TODAY Sports
14. Indianapolis Colts
14
Tim Williams
OLB, Alabama
Tim Williams had some questionable rumors surrounding him the past couple weeks. Some believe the Alabama outside linebacker had some off-the-field problems mostly in regards to drug use. It’s felt he’s in store for a drop on draft day. Then again it could be untrue or at least blown out of proportion. Bottom line is Williams is an athletic edge rusher who has one of the most explosive first steps in this class. He’s a great fit for that 3-4 outside linebacker position for Indianapolis.
Sep 17, 2016; Seattle, WA, USA; Washington Huskies wide receiver John Ross (1) rushes the ball against the Portland State Vikings during the second half at Husky Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Jennifer Buchanan-USA TODAY Sports
15. Philadelphia Eagles
15
John Ross
WR, Washington
Look at New England and Pittsburgh and it wouldn’t take long to see John Ross would fit their systems perfectly. He may be just 5’11” but the Washington receiver makes up for it with crisp route running and speed. He just knows how to get himself open and has a pair of reliable hands. Every time the Huskies needed a big play or a first down, he was the guy they looked to. So he won’t be a stranger to that same role in Philly.
Oct 29, 2016; Jacksonville, FL, USA; Florida Gators defensive back Quincy Wilson (6) and teammates run out of the tunnel before the game against the Georgia Bulldogs at EverBank Field. Mandatory Credit: Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports
16. Baltimore Ravens
16
Quincy Wilson
CB, Florida
Seeing Quincy Wilson fall to the #16 spot is pretty amazing. The Florida corner has gained a lot of steam in draft circles thanks to his impressive array of skills. He’s got size and length but also the athleticism to mirror well in space. His deep speed shouldn’t be a big issue as he can play tight press coverage without getting beat too often. The ball skills are there as well. No reason to think he can’t start immediately if asked.
Nov 12, 2016; Columbia, MO, USA; Missouri Tigers running back Damarea Crockett (16) runs the ball and is tackled by Vanderbilt Commodores linebacker Zach Cunningham (41) during the second half at Faurot Field. Missouri won 26-17. Mandatory Credit: Denny Medley-USA TODAY Sports
17. Washington Redskins
17
Zach Cunningham
ILB, Vanderbilt
Inside linebacker is one of their bigger weak points. Not a good thing when playing the Cowboys and that run game. Zach Cunningham is on pace to establish himself as one of the best in this class. An athletic, rangy and instinctive defender who is always around the football. Often he shows the ability to anticipate where the ball is going and arrives to make a play on it before the offense can react. That’s something the Redskins don’t have.
Jan 2, 2017; Tampa , FL, USA; Florida Gators defensive back Teez Tabor (31) defends Iowa Hawkeyes wide receiver Jay Scheel (3) in the second quarter at Raymond James Stadium. The Gators won 30-3. Mandatory Credit: Logan Bowles-USA TODAY Sports
18. Tennessee Titans
18
Teez Tabor
CB, Florida
Few schools have produced more quality defensive backs over the past few years than Florida. Just look at the array of recent 1st round picks like Keanu Neal and Vernon Hargreaves. Teez Tabor is the latest to come from that factory. Don’t be fooled by the lanky body. He’s plenty strong enough to play physical with receivers and has the athleticism to mirror them in coverage. Don’t take too many liberties by targeting him either. Or he’ll make the opponent pay.
Jan 9, 2017; Tampa, FL, USA; Alabama Crimson Tide tight end O.J. Howard (88) runs the ball while guarded by Clemson Tigers safety Jadar Johnson (18) during the fourth quarter in the 2017 College Football Playoff National Championship Game at Raymond James Stadium. Mandatory Credit: John David Mercer-USA TODAY Sports
19. Tampa Bay Buccaneers
19
O.J. Howard
TE, Alabama
People like O.J. Howard. As expected he lit up the Senior Bowl scene with his tantalizing mix of size, strength, speed, and versatility. He can run and catch passes like a receiver but also showcases the polished blocking ability desired from the position as well. He’s a true three-down player and one the Buccaneers could get so much use out of. With him and Evan on the field together, Winston becomes that much more dangerous.
Jan 2, 2017; Arlington, TX, USA; Wisconsin Badgers offensive lineman Ryan Ramczyk (65) in action during the game against the Western Michigan Broncos in the 2017 Cotton Bowl game at AT&T Stadium. The Badgers defeat the Broncos 24-16. Mandatory Credit: Jerome Miron-USA TODAY Sports
20. Denver Broncos
20
Ryan Ramczyk
OT, Wisconsin
Ryan Ramczyk is emerging as the best tackle prospect in the class. Big and strong per required, he stands out the most for his athleticism and ability to mirror pass rushers. He does have some lingering health concerns that bear monitoring. However, if he checks out then he has all the trappings of a future franchise left tackle. If Paxton Lynch ends up being the guy, then Ramczyk could be the one guarding his blind side.
Jan 9, 2017; Tampa, FL, USA; Alabama Crimson Tide defensive back Marlon Humphrey (26) reacts in the 2017 College Football Playoff National Championship Game against the Clemson Tigers at Raymond James Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports
21. Detroit Lions
21
Marlon Humphrey
CB, Alabama
They do seem to favor corners with some length. That makes Alabama starter Marlon Humphrey a definite option. He made a living in man coverage for the Crimson Tide the past two years. Though a bit stiff due to his longer frame, he’s got plenty of ability to be sticky in coverage with receivers. It’s rare to see him give up much separation at all, and doesn’t draw many flags either. He would be a starter right off the bat.
Nov 26, 2016; Miami Gardens, FL, USA; Miami Hurricanes tight end David Njoku (86) runs for a touchdown during the second half against Duke Blue Devils at Hard Rock Stadium. Miami won 40-21. Mandatory Credit: Steve Mitchell-USA TODAY Sports
22. Miami Dolphins
22
David Njoku
TE, Miami Fl.
Tight end was a big drawback for them. The failure of Jordan Cameron and loss of Charles Clay still looming large in their offense. So why not look to their backyard for help. David Njoku is no joke. The Miami tight end showcased his versatility as a blocker and a pass catcher throughout 2016. Not only dangerous after the catch as a runner, but also much better than he gets credit for at blocking. Adam Gase will find loads of things for him to do.
Nov 21, 2015; Philadelphia, PA, USA; Temple Owls defensive lineman Haason Reddick (58) dives to make a tackle on Memphis Tigers wide receiver Jae’lon Oglesby (19) during the first half at Lincoln Financial Field. Mandatory Credit: Derik Hamilton-USA TODAY Sports
23. New York Giants
23
Haason Reddick
OLB, Temple
Haason Reddick was a major revelation for teams at the Senior Bowl down in Mobile. He dominated practices all week, showcasing those exact traits. He’s an athlete who can play the run or cover in space but is just as good going after the quarterback. At 6’1″ he’s got the desired size as well. New York has always been a city and a team defined by its linebackers. Reddick fits that mold.
Sep 29, 2016; Lubbock, TX, USA; Texas Tech Red Raiders quarterback Patrick Mahomes (5) drops back to pass against the Kansas Jayhawks in the first half at Jones AT&T Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Michael C. Johnson-USA TODAY Sports
24. San Francisco 49ers (via OAK)
24
Patrick Mahomes
QB, Texas Tech
With Houston and Kansas City both major threats to take a QB, trading to get ahead of them is the only option. So they surrender their 3rd round pick to Oakland. In return they claim the last true starting-caliber quarterback in this class. Patrick Mahomes also may have the biggest ceiling. Watch him for a short time on tape and everything shows up. A big body with the ability to move and shake tackles. The strong arm and ability to strike accurately down the field. Given time, he can be what Kaepernick never became.
Sep 5, 2015; Arlington, TX, USA; Alabama Crimson Tide offensive lineman Cam Robinson (74) in game action against the Wisconsin Badgers at AT&T Stadium. Alabama won 35-17. Mandatory Credit: Tim Heitman-USA TODAY Sports
25. Houston Texans
25
Cam Robinson
OT, Alabama
Cam Robinson got a lot of grief for his off-the-field issues at Alabama but he was still the anchor of an offensive line that paved the way to two-straight national championship appearances. He’s big and showcases a lot of power in the run game. What he might lack in pure athleticism he makes more in length. If his fundamentals stay tight he can stand up well to NFL-caliber pass rushers.
Oct 15, 2016; Madison, WI, USA; Ohio State Buckeyes cornerback Gareon Conley (8) during the game against the Wisconsin Badgers at Camp Randall Stadium. Ohio State won 30-23. Mandatory Credit: Jeff Hanisch-USA TODAY Sports
26. Seattle Seahawks
26
Gareon Conley
CB, Ohio State
Luckily the 2017 draft is ready to oblige their problem. Cornerback is among the richest positions. Gareon Conley gets overlooked because he played on such a loaded defense but he’s done a fine job of putting together tape that accents his talent. He’s got the size required along with athleticism and enough speed to play man coverage. Better still he’d fit the Seahawks style thanks to his willingness to hit and tackle.
Sep 24, 2016; East Lansing, MI, USA; Michigan State Spartans defensive lineman Malik McDowell (4) talks to teammate during the second half of a game against the Wisconsin Badgers at Spartan Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Mike Carter-USA TODAY Sports
27. Kansas City Chiefs
27
Malik McDowell
DE, Michigan State
Malik McDowell is a unique specimen. He has the frame to handle more weight and play defensive end but is quick and explosive enough to play outside linebacker as well. It will come down to where the Chiefs feel he can do the most good. The job of Andy Reid will be keeping him motivated, as sometimes the young man can disappear for long stretches. If the motor is hot though, blockers won’t stand in his way.
Sep 3, 2016; Ann Arbor, MI, USA; Michigan Wolverines defensive end Taco Charlton (33) rushes on Hawaii Warriors offensive lineman RJ Hollis (74) at Michigan Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Rick Osentoski-USA TODAY Sports
28. Dallas Cowboys
28
Taco Charlton
DE, Michigan
Taco Charlton emerged in a big way for Michigan in 2016. The long, powerful and explosive defensive end was a consistent force off the edge. He can hold the point of attack against the run but is even better when cut loose against the quarterback. He’s still just discovering how good he can be. Put him under the guidance of a wily, old school veteran like Rod Marinelli and the sky is the limit.
October 1, 2016; Pasadena, CA, USA; UCLA Bruins defensive lineman Takkarist McKinley (98) brings down Arizona Wildcats quarterback Khalil Tate (14) during the second half at Rose Bowl. Mandatory Credit: Gary A. Vasquez-USA TODAY Sports
29. Green Bay Packers
29
Takkarist McKinley
OLB, UCLA
If he’s getting serious, then the time is right to start adding dynamic players. A young edge rusher will certainly help. Takkarist McKinley broke out in a big way for UCLA this past season. Good-sized with quickness and explosion, he can attack the backfield and make plays to frustrate the offense in either run or passing situations. His athleticism should make a transition to outside linebacker easy.
Nov 26, 2016; Madison, WI, USA; Wisconsin Badgers linebacker T.J. Watt (42) celebrates following a sack during the second quarter against the Minnesota Golden Gophers at Camp Randall Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Jeff Hanisch-USA TODAY Sports
30. Pittsburgh Steelers
30
T.J. Watt
OLB, Wisconsin
Being the brother of J.J. Watt may get T.J. Watt plenty of attention, but the reason he’s projected as a high pick is because of his own talent. Like his brother, Watt is a long defender with a relentless disposition. He goes hard after the football and blockers have a hard timing keeping him at bay. T.J. is stronger than he looks and is quite versatile in his ability to move around the field. Exactly what the Steelers want.
December 2, 2016; Santa Clara, CA, USA; Colorado Buffaloes wide receiver Shay Fields (1) is tackled by Washington Huskies defensive back Sidney Jones (26) during the first quarter in the Pac-12 championship at Levi’s Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports
31. Atlanta Falcons
31
Sidney Jones
CB, Washington
Washington is fast becoming a pipeline for serious NFL talent. Marcus Peters proved that in Kansas City. Sidney Jones could be their latest cornerback project that works out well in the pros. He too has that nice combination of size, speed and athleticism to go along with ball skills. Leave him on an island outside or in the slot and odds are he’ll do his job almost every time. Exactly what Dan Quinn will be looking for.
Sep 24, 2016; Ann Arbor, MI, USA; Michigan Wolverines linebacker Jabrill Peppers (5) is seen during the game against the Penn State Nittany Lions at Michigan Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Rick Osentoski-USA TODAY Sports
32. New England Patriots
32
Jabrill Peppers
S, Michigan
That is why Jabrill Peppers is such a Patriots pick. On the surface it looks like a reach. A safety who wasn’t overly productive in coverage at Michigan. Yet he was an excellent return man who played quality snaps at running back and showed lots of promise as a blitzer and tackler. He might be one of the best athletes in the class as well. There are a number of positions he can play, and that is exactly what New England will want him to do.
Sep 4, 2015; Kalamazoo, MI, USA; Western Michigan Broncos wide receiver Corey Davis (84) runs for yards after a catch against Michigan State Spartans linebacker Darien Harris (45) during the 2nd half of a game at Waldo Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Mike Carter-USA TODAY Sports
