2017 NFL Mock Draft: Dalvin Cook makes his case

The 2016 NFL season is entering Week 13, and the Cleveland Browns are still searching for their first win. Here is our 2017 NFL Mock Draft entering Week 13.

The Cleveland Browns lost their 12th game of the season on Sunday, and will now head into their bye week winless. They are slated to draft first in the 2017 NFL Draft next April, and they will also have a second pick in the round thanks to the Philadelphia Eagles. Here is a look at our latest Mock Draft, with picks No. 21 through 32 reflecting the playoff seeding if the season ended today, beginning with the lowest seeds.

Here is our latest  mock draft with the draft order based on record, and using strength of schedule as a tiebreaker.

Myles Garrett

DE, Texas A&M

Another week, another loss for the Cleveland Browns, who are very close to becoming the second team in league history to finish a season at 0-16. This past weekend, they put up a pretty good fight against the New York Giants, as they were able to move the ball pretty well with Josh McCown under center. However, the Giants defense proved to be too much in the long run, as the Browns had no answer for Eli Manning and company.

While the San Francisco 49ers are making a strong push for the No. 1 pick, winning only one game this season, the winless Browns would pick first next April. With that pick, the team should select Myles Garrett from Texas A&M, as he would instantly bolster their defensive front. The Browns struggle to get much of a pass rush, and adding Garrett to the fold would give them an explosive rusher off the edge.

One player is not going to turn around the mess that is the Cleveland Browns, though they did play well enough on Sunday to win the game. There is no sure-fire quarterback in this draft, and missing with the first overall pick is only going to set the organization back further. They do have a second first round draft pick at No. 13, and we expect them to grab a quarterback then.

Jonathan Allen

DL, Alabama

The San Francisco 49ers are a sorry excuse for a football team, as head coach Chip Kelly has labored through a 1-10 record in his first season at the helm. San Fran has already turned to both Blaine Gabbert and Colin Kaepernick to right the ship, but the results have not been good. They could easily take a quarterback here at No. 2, though I believe they are going to wait to get one via free agency, or next year’s draft.

Jonathan Allen is the kind of defensive talent that can turn around a defense, and the 49ers need someone who is going to put some pressure on up front. He has the size and speed to be a dominant force on the defensive line, and can move offensive lineman with ease thanks to his incredible hands. He seems to get better every week, and he just may be too good to pass up this early in the first round.

San Francisco needs a lot of help, and while Kaepernick is sure to be gone after this season, a guy like Kirk Cousins just may be available. Chip Kelly needs to start winning ball games as soon as possible, and a solid defense could definitely be competitive in the NFC West. He is going to want to make a splash in this draft with a sexy pick, but taking Allen here is the safest way to go.

Jabrill Peppers

LB/S, Michigan

Prior to the 2016 NFL season, many experts expected the Jacksonville Jaguars to take over as the class of the AFC South. However, through the first 12 weeks of the season, that has certainly not been the case, as both sides of the ball have struggled. They have a nice young core of offensive players that should be better next season, but their defense is lacking that star power needed to compete with the teams in their division.

The Houston Texans are solid, the Indianapolis Colts have an incredible quarterback, and the Tennessee Titans are a team on the rise. That means the Jaguars need to get their act together quickly, or they could be cellar dwellers in the division for a long time. They need to inject a playmaker on their defensive unit, and Jabrill Peppers has the skill set to do some incredible things on Sunday.

The Michigan linebacker may grade out to be a safety at the next level, but he can be used on both sides of the ball as well. He has played running back, wildcat, and has even been a return man for the Wolverines, who have featured him nicely this season. He would instantly become a fan favorite in Jacksonville, and could help keep the Jags relevant in the division for years to come.

Mitch Trubisky

QB, North Carolina

The Chicago Bears were dealt another blow this past week, as star linebacker Danny Trevathan was put on IR, ending his season. Even with Trevathan, the team has been terrible this season, and will definitely be picking within the first five picks next April. The team needs to fix a bunch of holes on their roster, but none is bigger than the one under center.

It has been an awful year for Bears quarterback Jay Cutler, who will likely be gone after the season. Cutler has battled inefficiency and injuries throughout the season, and fans are tired of him being the team’s quarterback. There are a couple quarterbacks in this draft that could be good pros, but Mitch Trubisky from the University of North Carolina is the best of them.

What sets Trubisky apart is his decision making abilities, that have yielded only four interceptions this season. Despite only one season as the starter on Chapel Hill, Trubisky has shown he has the most NFL-ready skill set, and could step right in for the 2017 season. There is going to be plenty of debate on this before it is draft time, but Trubisky should be the first quarterback off the board.

Marlon Humphrey

CB, Alabama

What a bad season it has been for the New York Jets, who have played poorly on both sides of the ball. The team decided to bring back Ryan Fitzpatrick after his incredible season in 2015, only to see injuries and bad play force him to the bench. He is back under center for the team now, but is definitely not the team’s future at the position.

The organization took Bryce Petty in the fourth round two years ago, and Christian Hackenberg in the second round last year, so they will likely get a shot at running the show before the team hits up another draft for an arm. One huge are of concern, aside from the quarterback position, has to be cornerback play, where veteran Darrelle Revis suddenly looks very old. Whether he hurt, or just way up there in age to approach his Revis Island status, it is time to get him some help back in the secondary.

Alabama’s Marlon Humphrey is my favorite cornerback in this draft, but he could certain be picked after one or two others. His ability to get after the ball is second to no-one in this class, and he has incredible hands for someone that plays in the defensive backfield. He is the son of a former NFL running back, and just has that kind of tenacity that would play well in New York. Adding Humphrey to the secondary could take some of the pressure off Revis, who is no longer an elite player.

Derek Barnett

DE, Tennessee

The Cincinnati Bengals have been one of the worst stories in the NFL, as they have struggled on a weekly basis this season. Quarterback Andy Dalton has played ok, but looks to have taken a bit of a step back this season. Wide receiver A.J. Green is done for the year, and the running back situation does not look like a strength any longer. Getting Green back next season will be huge, but the team needs to improve on the defensive side of the ball.

Tennessee’s Derek Barnett is very close to being as good as Myles Garrett at the defensive end position, but he should be considered a top-10 draft pick in his own right. He could be the most explosive pass rusher in this draft, and places with such intensity that is can be hard for him to control his emotions. Still, head coach Marvin Lewis would love to have a player like him on his roster, and he would be a nice pickup early in round one.

The Bengals are not far from being right back in the playoff race next season, and adding a piece like Barnett would shore up a weak spot in their defense. They need to be able to get after the quarterback, and while Barnett does not have elite size and speed, he is one of the more NFL-ready players available next April.

Nov 19, 2016; Tuscaloosa, AL, USA; Alabama Crimson Tide linebacker Reuben Foster (10) grabs Chattanooga Mocs running back Alex Trotter (24) at Bryant-Denny Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Marvin Gentry-USA TODAY Sports

Reuben Foster

LB, Alabama

The Tennessee Titans are one of the more exciting young teams in football, as second-year quarterback Marcus Mariota has taken a huge step forward this season. They have a couple of nice weapons on the offensive side of the ball, and with a few new faces on the defense, they could seriously be an AFC contender very soon. In fact, the Titans could wind up catching the Houston Texans for the AFC South division title this season, though that would not affect this pick.

Tennessee will pick early thanks to the Los Angeles Rams, who traded them the pick in exchange for the No. 1 overall selection in last April’s draft. That pick was used on quarterback Jared Goff, who actually looked good in his second NFL start this past week. With their first of two picks in round one, the Titans should look to shore up their defense, and Alabama’s Reuben Foster may be in play here.

Foster is the best inside linebacker in this draft, and should be gone within the first ten picks next April. He is the unquestioned leader of an Alabama defense that has become a dynasty in college football. He has an incredible feel for the game, and does very well against the run, and coverage against the pass. The Titans need to fix their defense heading into next season, and Foster would be a starter from day one.

Nov 12, 2016; Fayetteville, AR, USA; LSU Tigers running back Leonard Fournette (7) runs during the first quarter of the game against the Arkansas Razorbacks at Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Brett Rojo-USA TODAY Sports

Leonard Fournette

RB, LSU

The incredible slide from Super Bowl participant to picking in the top-10 of the following draft continued this past Sunday, as the Carolina Panthers lost a tough one to the Oakland Raiders. Quarterback Cam Newton played very well in the game, but the team was not able to muster much on the ground. While Jonathan Stewart is still very good in short yardage situations, the team needs a new feature back, and that player could be Leonard Fournette.

Fournette has been a beast during his time with the LSU Tigers, and will likely be gone after the season ends. He has had to battle some injuries this season, which has cost him a couple of starts along the way. He is as NFL-ready a back as we have seen in some time, and the Panthers would be able to use him so well alongside Newton in the Panthers offense.

Carolina is very close to being a dominating team once again, and adding a feature back for Newton would extend his career a bit. Newton has been asked to make the big run on numerous occasions this season, and the hits are starting to take a toll. Running back is a need in Carolina, and if they can grab Fournette, the young offensive core of Newton, Fournette, and Kelvin Benjamin would be one of the better three-headed monsters in the NFC.

Nov 26, 2016; Los Angeles, CA, USA; Notre Dame Fighting Irish quarterback DeShone Kizer (14) throws a pass against the Southern California Trojans during a NCAA football game at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. Mandatory Credit: Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

DeShone Kizer

QB, Notre Dame

This past Sunday, the Arizona Cardinals were throttled by the Atlanta Falcons, in a very bad showing by a very good defense. The defense is definitely not the problem, as teams are allowed to have bad games once in a while. The issue in Arizona is that their quarterback is getting up there in age, and there is no telling how many good years Carson Palmer has in his arm.

There are a few quarterbacks that could go in round one, though this class is not as stacked as the 2018 field. However, DeShone Kizer of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish has the skills to be a very good quarterback at the next level, and could spend a year or two learning from Palmer. He is not ready to step in right away a start, which would make Arizona a perfect situation for him.

Kizer has incredible pocket presence, and he possesses the arm strength to make all the throws at the NFL level. His issue has been his decision making, as he has played some subpar games for the Irish this season. Still, head coach Bruce Arians is very good at bring quarterbacks along, and a year or two watching tape with a veteran like Palmer could wind up making Kizer the best pro of the bunch down the line.

Oct 22, 2016; Tuscaloosa, AL, USA; Alabama Crimson Tide linebacker Tim Williams (56) reacts after sacking the Texas A&M Aggies quarterback at Bryant-Denny Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Marvin Gentry-USA TODAY Sports

Tim Williams

LB, Alabama

For years, Robert Mathis has been a mainstay in the Indianapolis Colts defense. However, his career looks to be entering its twilight, and it is time for the organization to start looking for his replacement. The team has an incredible quarterback in Andrew Luck, but the longer they wait to put a good defense out there, the fewer years they are going to have to make a run.

Alabama’s Tim Williams could be the kind of linebacker/edge rusher the team needs now that Mathis is on the decline. He has an incredible motor, and his ability to get after the quarterback is extremely rare. Williams has had a few character issues during his time with the Crimson Tide, but that appears to be in the past, and he is a legitimate first round talent in this draft.

The AFC South is very winnable, and the Colts are hanging in there even with a mediocre defense. If they do miss the playoffs, there are some great defensive players in this draft that would fit right in in Indianapolis. Every year, the window gets smaller and smaller for Luck, so drafting high one year may actually help the franchise in the long run.

Dalvin Cook

RB, Florida State

The Green Bay Packers picked up a nice road victory against the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday Night Football this week, as Aaron Rodgers once again showed that he is still one of the best quarterbacks in football. The trio of Davante Adams, Jordy Nelson, and Randall Cobb could be the best three-receiver tandem in the NFL, but the team is seriously missing a running back. There are a handful of good ones in this draft, but behind Fournette, Dalvin Cook is the next man up.

Cook has had a record-breaking career at Florida State, and is one of the best running backs in the history of the Atlantic Coast Conference. He is an incredibly gifted runner, who has the size to run over people when he needs to. He has the kind of breakaway speed needed at the next level, and would be an instant upgrade over a player like James Starks. Cook can be utilized in the passing game as well, so expect Rodgers to be very happy if they can land Cook next April.

The junior has not declared for the NFL Draft yet, but that is certain to come in the coming weeks. He could be the missing piece the Packers need to return to glory in the NFC. They are currently winning games due to the ability of Rodgers, but he is getting up there in age, and if they do not get him a solid running back, time may run out on another Super Bowl run.

Oct 29, 2016; Jacksonville, FL, USA; Florida Gators defensive back Teez Tabor (31) and teammates run out of the tunnel before the game against the Georgia Bulldogs at EverBank Field. Mandatory Credit: Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

Teez Tabor

CB, Florida

Drew Brees and company were at it again this past weekend, putting up 42 points on the Los Angeles Rams inside the Superdome. The issue this season has not been the offense, which is once again one of the more high-powered units in the NFC. The problem has been stopping anybody, as the team looks like a leaky faucet at times, especially in the secondary.

The 2017 NFL Draft should be stockpiled with good cornerbacks, and Florida’s Teez Tabor just may be the second-best of them all. Behind Marlon Humphrey of Alabama, Tabor is the most complete cornerback, due to his ability to defend against the pass, and come up and hit when needed. He is the kind of player who strikes fear into a quarterback’s heart, as they have not tested him at all this season it seems.

Tabor is an absolute ball-hawk, and he should grade out to be a plus-cornerback at the next level. He and Quincy Wilson have formed the best 1-2 cornerback tandem in the SEC, and they have led the Gators to a solid season despite the team struggling on the offensive side of the ball. He should be available when the Saints pick in the first round, and he would be perfect for Sean Payton and the rest of the Saints down in the Bayou.

Deshaun Watson

QB, Clemson

The Cleveland Browns will pick twice in the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft, and they just may take a swing at Deshaun Watson with the thirteenth pick. Watson has been star during his time with the Clemson Tigers, but he has shown the propensity to throw interceptions this season. He has made some bad decisions this season for the Tigers, which has proven to be pretty alarming to some scouts.

Some believe Watson is a second-round talent, but knowing the Browns, they are going to try and grab a quarterback in the first round. While I personally do not think that is smart, it is just the way of business around the organization, which has been dreadful since league awarded Cleveland a franchise after Art Modell move the team to Baltimore. Watson may end up being a home run, or he could just be another in a long line of failed first round quarterbacks for Cleveland.

Watching them on Sunday, it is clear they have some nice parts on offense. Terrell Pryor Sr. is an absolute star, and Isaiah Crowell runs the ball hard. Watson does have the tools to make it at the next level, but he is going to need a year or two before he is ready to lead a franchise. Cleveland made a mistake thrusting Johnny Manziel into the starting role after taking him in the first round, so let’s hope they do not make that mistake again.

Mike Williams

WR, Clemson

San Diego picked up another big win this past weekend, and had it not been for some late game follies early in the season, they would actually be holding serve in the AFC West this season. However, losses are losses, and as it currently stands, they would be on the outside looking in come January. Quarterback Philip Rivers is having a fantastic season despite losing a ton of weapons on offense due to injury, though questions will loom heading into next season.

Star wide receiver Keenan Allen tore his ACL in Week 1 of the NFL season, blowing out his knee in a non-contact injury. Allen has been bitten by the injury bug throughout his career, and some fear he may not come back as the No. 1receiver he was. That would clear room for the team to draft a wideout in April, and that player should be Mike Williams.

To watch Williams play is to see a player who could be a star at the NFL level right now. He makes incredible catches look easy, and has the kind of hands that make scouts drool. He is definitely the best wide receiver in this draft class, and if the Chargers do take a swing at a wideout, they could move Allen over to WR2, while sending breakout player Tyrell Williams to WR3. It would be a pretty dangerous setup in San Diego.

Nov 5, 2016; Berkeley, CA, USA; Washington Huskies wide receiver John Ross (1) scores a touchdown against the California Golden Bears during the first quarter at Memorial Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Kelley L Cox-USA TODAY Sports

John Ross

WR, Washington

Marcus Mariota is blossoming into one of the better quarterbacks in the NFL, and he has put to bed all of the critics who said his game would not equate at the pro level. He seems to get better every week, and it is clear that the Tennessee Titans are definitely on the upswing as an organization. The one area the team is lacking on the offensive side of the ball is at wide receiver, where they have a cast of WR2s pretending to be lead guys.

It has worked out on plenty of occasions this season, however, as guys like Rishard Matthews, Kendall Wright, and Tajae Sharpe have looked very good at times. Still, Mariota needs that top option if he is going to continue to grow, and the team should look to the Northwest for a star playing for the Washington Huskies.

That player is John Ross, who has emerged as the best wide receiver in the Pac-12 this season. That is pretty high praise considering a man named JuJu Smith-Schuster just happens to play in that conference. Ross can do it all, and has made every team’s No. 1 cornerback look silly this season. Mariota’s stock continues to rise, and Ross could become a star in Tennessee as well.

Malik McDowell

DT, Michigan State

Buffalo Bills head coach Rex Ryan has made his living in the National Football League being an incredible defensive mind. The son of former NFL head coach Buddy Ryan, Rex has brought the same kind of bravado his old man showed to his two stops as a head coach. The Bills have some good players up and down their roster, but they need some help on the defensive side of the ball.

Malik McDowell of the Michigan State Spartans is an interesting player, as he has the ability to play all over the defensive line. He has been relied upon to clog the middle during his time with the Spartans, becoming one of the best defensive tackles in college football. However, he also has the size and speed to play on the outside, which could be his calling at the next level.

The Bills spent the money on making Tyrod Taylor their franchise quarterback, and wide receiver Sammy Watkins and running back LeSean McCoy are stars in the league. McDowell would give the Bills a defensive identity, one that has been lacking in recent years. Ryan could do so much with a player that has McDowell’s skill set, so it will not be surprised if they come knocking in the middle of the first round.

Marshon Lattimore

CB, Ohio State

The Philadelphia Eagles were exploited in the secondary by Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers on Monday Night Football, as their cornerbacks looked lost at times. They were beat by slants time and time again, leading to a two-touchdown game for the Packers quarterback. The Eagles have a couple of holes in their roster, but bolstering the secondary should be a priority next April.

Ohio State’s Marshon Lattimore is a dynamic cornerback, who has helped the Buckeyes become one of the better defensive programs in the country. Lattimore is a punishing hitter, who would fit in perfectly with the fan base in Philadelphia. There is nothing Eagles fans love more than a player who puts it on the line every play, and Lattimore is that kind of player.

Lattimore and Gareon Conley are a formidable 1-2 punch for the Buckeyes in the secondary, and they just may lead them to the College Football Playoff. Some believe the Buckeyes secondary is the closest to an NFL unit as there is in college football, and Lattimore is the unquestioned leader. The Eagles need to be able to stop the likes of Kirk Cousins, Eli Manning, and Dak Prescott on a weekly basis, and Lattimore would go a long way in ensuring the Birds have solid corners against the pass.

Oct 15, 2016; Baton Rouge, LA, USA; LSU Tigers safety Jamal Adams (33) celebrates after picking up a fumble during the third quarter of a game against the Southern Miss Golden Eagles at Tiger Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Derick E. Hingle-USA TODAY Sports

Jamal Adams

S, LSU

Don’t look now, but the Tampa Bay Buccaneers may be starting to turn a corner. One week after holding the Kansas City Chiefs offense at bay on the road, the Bucs returned to home to face one of the best teams in the conference in the Seattle Seahawks. All they did in that game was hold Russell Wilson and company to five points, rolling to their second impressive victory in a row.

While the defense has been playing better as of late, there is no doubt that the team will look to upgrade their secondary in next April’s draft. One area of need is at the safety position, where their current options cannot get the job done on a weekly basis. Adding a player like LSU’s Jamal Adams may be just what the team needs to continue to grow into a power in the NFC.

Adams and Malik Hooker are graded as the two best safeties in this draft class, with Adams edging out Hooker by a slim margin. What we like about Adams is his ability to come up and stuff the run, as he likes dishing out the hits more than he does grabbing interceptions. He can do it all, and when you combine his coverage skills, with his hitting ability, it makes for one scary dude sitting back in the secondary.

Zach Cunningham

LB, Vanderbilt

The Pittsburgh Steelers have been one of the more consistent teams in the league for the past decade, although as it stands now, they would not be a playoff team in 2016. They have had to deal with a ton of issues this season, though when they are together as a unit, they can beat any team in the league. They have looked a bit old on the defensive side of the ball, however, and need to inject some young talent into their linebacking corps.

That player should be Zach Cunningham of Vanderbilt, who is one of the more exciting players in college football. Cunningham has an incredible nose for the ball, and can make plays from sideline to sidelines. He has a motor that just won’t quit, and would be a perfect fit for the Steel City. The Steelers are set with playmakers on the offensive side of the ball, so adding a quality backer will be of utmost importance next April.

It is only Week 12, and the Steelers and division-leading Baltimore actually have the same record. Pittsburgh could easily be picking later in round one when all is said and done, and by then, Cunningham will likely be off the board. Star linebacker James Harrison is likely done after this year, so bringing in another hard-hitting backer would be a nice bridge to the next decade of solid linebacker play inside Heinz Field.

Cam Robinson

OT, Alabama

On Sunday night, the Denver Broncos and Kansas City Chiefs did battle inside Sports Authority Field in a huge AFC West matchup. The overtime win by the Chiefs vaulted them into the playoff picture as of Week 12, and in turn, left the Broncos out. Still, there is a ton of NFL season left to go, and the two teams will meet once more at Arrowhead Stadium later in the year.

If Denver does miss the playoffs, it will not be because of their defense. The Broncos boast one of the best defenses in all of football again this season, and have been winning games despite playing with an inexperienced quarterback under center. Next April, the team should look to add to their offensive line depth, as the Chiefs exposed that as a weakness during their overtime win in Week 12.

Cam Robinson of the Alabama Crimson Tide is the best offensive line prospect in this draft, and he could easily go earlier if someone decides to bolster their unit. However, he would be a perfect fit for the Broncos, who love to get things going by running the ball. Quarterback Trevor Siemian continues to develop, and the team drafted Paxton Lynch last season to be the future at the position. Adding Robinson in 2017 would give them an anchor on their line for the next 10 years.

Nov 19, 2016; Salt Lake City, UT, USA; Oregon Ducks wide receiver Darren Carrington II (7) is tackled by Utah Utes defensive tackle Lowell Lotulelei (93) during the second half at Rice-Eccles Stadium. Oregon won 30-28. Mandatory Credit: Russ Isabella-USA TODAY Sports

Lowell Lotulelei

DT, Utah

It is about time for the Washington Redskins to give quarterback Kirk Cousins a contract, because if they don’t, there are plenty of teams out there who would like to have his services. Cousins has been a solid starter since taking over for Robert Griffin III last season, leading the Redskins to an NFC East title in his first year under center. The Skins appear to be in good shape on the offensive side of the ball, but they need help on defense.

One area where they are weak is up front, where they continue to get push around on the defensive line. The organization needs a big body to put in the middle of the defense, and Lowell Lotulelei is one of the best big men in all of college football. The brother of a star defensive lineman for the Baltimore Ravens, the younger Lotulelei may wind up being an even better player than his brother, Star.

Washington plays in a tough conference, and teams like the Dallas Cowboys are only getting younger, and more talented. Ezekiel Elliott ran all over the Skins this past week on Thanksgiving, exploiting what is the weakest part of their roster. They need to go big here, and whether or not it is Lotulelei, the Redskins will not be champs in NFC East again unless they can stop the run.

Dan Feeney

OG, Indiana

While we believe that Cam Robinson is the best offensive tackle in this draft, Dan Feeney may actually be the best overall offensive lineman. The Indiana product does not get much hype, basically because he plays for Indiana, but he is the most NFL-ready guard in this draft. He has the size and feet to do good things at the next level, and his brute strength is what sets him apart in this draft class.

The Dolphins went offensive line in the first round of the 2016 NFL Draft, taking Laremy Tunsil out of Ole Miss, despite the fact that a draft day video appeared on his social media of him take a bong hit out of a gas mask. Tunsil has done a nice job at the guard position for the Dolphins this season, but they should be able to move him back to tackle in 2017. If the Fins do grab Feeney, they would have too very young, very good offensive lineman to build around.

Jay Ajayi is developing into a top running back in the AFC, and it appears the team is prepared to move forward with Ryan Tannehill as the starting quarterback. Bolstering the offensive line is so important in this league, as we are seeing with teams like the Dallas Cowboys, and the Oakland Raiders. Feeney is a special one, and should be the only guard taken in the first round in April.

The New York Giants continue to roll this season, as their won their sixth-straight game this past weekend. The only problem is that they play in the NFC East, where the Dallas Cowboys lead with the best record in all of football. Still, this is a Giants team that should be headed to the playoffs, and they are getting great play out of their defense.

That unit was supposed to be a weak spot for the team, but the new acquisitions are playing very good football. New York went defense last year in the first round, taking Eli Apple out of Ohio State. This year, they should look to add a play maker on offense, and that pick should be O.J. Howard of the University of Alabama, a dynamic tight end for the Crimson Tide.

Eli Manning did some great things when he had Jeremy Shockey at tight end, and Howard has the same kind of skill set as Shockey did when he came out of the University of Miami. He blocks well, but he has that ability to make incredible catches that teams look for in a tight end these days. The Giants offense has gotten stale in recent weeks, so adding a player like Howard to a receiving unit with guys like Odell Beckham Jr. and Sterling Shepard could be quite explosive.

Curtis Samuel

RB/WR, Ohio State

The Kansas City Chiefs have struggled as a unit offensively this season, and it could wind up being their Achilles Heel come playoff time. However, on Sunday night, 2016 fifth-round draft pick Tyreek Hill showed he may be the next big playmaker for the Chiefs, as he carried the load with Jeremy Maclin on the shelf. Still, Kansas City needs more help on the offensive side of the ball, and Curtis Samuel from Ohio State could be the answer.

Samuel is fresh off the biggest run of his collegiate career, as his 15-yard overtime touchdown gave the Buckeyes a huge home win against the hated Michigan Wolverines. In scoring, Samuel saved the Buckeyes season, and they should be invited to the College Football Playoff at 11-1. He does everything on offense, and could be a wide receiver or running back at the next level.

Kansas City may wind up grabbing a quarterback in the later rounds, as Alex Smith is starting get a little boring behind center. However, there is no-one that can replace him right away in this draft, so they should try to put some more weapons around him. Samuel would look good in Kansas City, and Chiefs fans would fall in love with his ability to make big plays.

The Houston Texans made the decision this past offseason to bring in a new quarterback and running back, signing Brock Osweiler and Lamar Miller to high-money deals. The deal has not paid off, as Osweiler has been terrible, and Miller has not been used correctly. Come draft day, the Texans are likely to bolster their defensive secondary, as Osweiler and the rest of the offense will likely get at least another year to gel.

The thing is, the Texans are actually in first place in the AFC South, all the while doing it without their best player. J.J. Watt will miss the entire season, and he may not come back as the same player next year. The AFC South is full of good young quarterbacks, so it would make sense for the team to get as many good defensive backs as they can going forward. Houston has to face Marcus Mariota or Andrew Luck during a quarter of their schedule every year, so Hooker should be the play this late in the first round.

Hooker of the Ohio State Buckeyes is a fantastic safety, who would be a starter for the Texans from day one. He does a nice job in coverage, using his incredible athleticism to make up ground when he does make a mistake. Hooker also is very good at coming up and delivering big hits, which is something the Texans are lacking right now in their secondary.

Adoree' Jackson

CB, USC

How good are the Atlanta Falcons on offense? Well, this past Saturday they absolutely destroyed the Arizona Cardinals, who came into the game rated as one of the best defenses in the league. Not only were they able to put up a ton of points, but they were able to do it without much help from their best player, Julio Jones. Atlanta has two good running backs as well, making them the most dangerous offense team in the NFC.

Their defense? That is another story, as they may be a player or two away from being a legitimate Super Bowl contender. The 2017 NFL Draft will be loaded with playmakers on defense, and there may be none bigger than Adoree’ Jackson of the USC Trojans. Not only is he a premier cornerback, but Jackson is also the best return man in college football, making him a lock for the first round in April if he comes out.

Atlanta was once home to Deion Sanders, who captivated the football world with his ability to be a shutdown corner, and then return the punt back for a touchdown. Jackson has that kind of ability, and while he is by no means as talented as Neon Deion, he would be an instant sparkplug for the Falcons. The Trojans have finished the 2016 college regular season as the hottest team in the nation, and Jackson is a big reason why.

Carl Lawson

DE, Auburn

The Baltimore Ravens are back to playing hard-nosed football, and their defense has looked a lot better as of late. Still, they need to get more pressure on the quarterback, which has been a signature for the franchise since it moved from Cleveland. The veterans on the defense are starting to get long in the tooth, and it is time to inject some young blood on that side of the ball.

Auburn’s Carl Lawson is an exciting player, who has an incredible nose for the ball. He is one of the more explosive players at his position in all of college football, and some mock drafts have him going in the top-10. While we rate him below guys like Myles Garrett and Derek Barnett, he should still grade out to be a fantastic pro.

Baltimore has been a bit of a surprise this season, as they currently are in first place in the AFC North. However, they are only 6-5 on the season, and need to bolster their defense if they want to continue to be known as a hard-hitting organization. They also need a running back and wide receiver, but getting some more pressure on the edge has to be priority No. 1.

Sidney Jones

CB, Washington

The Detroit Lions are another team having a surprisingly good year, just one year removed from seeing their star player retire at an early age. While quarterback Matthew Stafford definitely misses Calvin Johnson, he is not playing like it, and is putting up MVP numbers for the first place Lions. The offense is clicking on all facets, and if they can get some players on defense, they could be a formidable contender for years to come.

One area of need is the secondary, where they have shown that they can be burned on numerous occasions. They just do not have enough talent back there, and teams like the Green Bay Packers and Atlanta Falcons are going to exploit that. Sidney Jones of Washington is one of the better cover corners in recent memory, and would be a steal this late in the first round.

Jones has the ability to man the team’s No. 1 wide receiver, and playing in the Pac-12, he has gone up against some serious talent this season. Not only does he have the size to play at the next level, but he has the kind of closing speed that turns mistakes into interceptions. He may not always come up and make the big hit, but he is definitely a shutdown cornerback for sure.

Mike McGlinchey

OT, Notre Dame

Seattle showed this past weekend that they have some serious issues on the offensive side of the ball, mostly on their offensive line. They cannot continue to let Russell Wilson get hit the way he did this past weekend, or it could be a shorter career than it has to be. They have struggled to find a running game since the departure of Marshawn Lynch as well, and that is mostly due to the fact they have a weak offensive line.

We like Mike McGlinchey to go here, as he has the ability to play both sides of the line. He has played right and left tackle during his time with the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, and has been a catalyst for some very good Irish teams. He is a bruising offensive lineman, who has the kind of brute strength that can clear holes on his own, while possessing the feet to protect well in the passing game.

Wilson is an asset, and the team needs to protect him. That has to be their top priority going forward, or else there are going to more games like last week, where they scored only five points against the Tampa Bay Buccanneers. McGlinchey is a cornerstone-type offensive lineman, and whether it is on the right or left side, he will definitely make an impact as a rookie in 2017 if he decides to come out.

Christian McCaffrey

RB, Stanford

For a time there, it looked like Stanford running back Christian McCaffrey was ruining his draft status with every game. Then, all of a sudden, the junior went on a tear over the last five games of the season, cementing his spot as the best collegiate running back of them all. While he may not be the NFL prospect that Leonard Fournette or Dalvin Cook are, he is sure to make an impact on Sundays next season.

The New England Patriots looked flat on offense this past weekend against the New York Jets, as they had to rely on Malcolm Mitchell to get the job done in the passing game. Their running backs did not do much of anything, and without Rob Gronkowski in the lineup for the majority of the game, they really did not have much of an identity. Drafting a player like McCaffrey would change all that, and would give them an incredible weapon in both the run, and pass game.

McCaffrey is the son of a former NFL player, so he grew up around the game. He is also one of the smartest players in all of college football, and plays with the kind of grit and determination that a head coach like Bill Belichick would love. Based on his recent exploits, he may be gone by the time the Pats draft next April, but he would sure look good behind Tom Brady next season in Foxboro.

Desmond King

CB, Iowa

The Oakland Raiders won another game this past weekend, and are now the No. 1 seed in the AFC if the playoffs started today. Boasting arguably the best young quarterback in the league, the Raiders clinched their first winning season since 2001 this past weekend, as they beat Cam Newton and the Carolina Panthers to move to 9-2. Their offense is loaded with talent, but their secondary could prove to be their kryptonite this season.

Adding quality cornerback depth has to be a priority for an organization that has really hit some home runs in recent drafts. Desmond King of Iowa could have been a first round selection in the 2016 NFL Draft, but he instead decided to return to the Hawkeyes for his senior season. That proved to be a great decision, as he was a big part of the program’s biggest win in recent memory, a home victory against No. 2 Michigan.

Oakland is very close to being a Super Bowl team, and some believe they just may make it this season. However, we need to proceed with caution, because quarterbacks like Tom Brady will likely find it easy to pass the ball against their suspect secondary. King would be an instant upgrade over guys like D.J. Hayden and David Amerson, and would team with Sean Smith to give the Raiders a solid 1-2 punch on the outside.

Taco Charlton

DL, Michigan

Taco Charlton may have been the big winner of this past weekend’s Big Game, though his Wolverines lost an overtime affair against the hated Ohio State Buckeyes. The 6-foot-6 Charlton could definitely start on the strong side of a 4-3 defensive scheme, and his ability to split double-teams was on full display in front of a national audience this weekend. He was even able to chase down Buckeyes running back Mike Weber, which was certain to catch the eye of the plethora of NFL scouts at the game.

Dallas hit a home run with their draft picks in 2016, and while nobody expects that every year, they do have an opportunity to add to an already impressive roster. They currently own the best record in the league at 10-1, and many believe they have the talent on offense to go all the way. The Cowboys have done a nice job bolstering their offensive line in recent years, and rookie running back Ezekiel Elliott has established himself as arguably the best back in the league.

Picking last in the first round is always a tough task, as the players you probably want the most are gone by the time you get to select one. However, it also means you are the Super Bowl Champions, so I am sure the Cowboys would love to pick at No. 32 in April. They are set on offense for the foreseeable future, and if a prospect like Charlton were to pan out, it would just be another outstanding draft for Jerry Jones and company down in Dallas.
