2017 NFL Draft: SMU Courtland Sutton Scouting Report

SMU’s Courtland Sutton is an emerging 2017 NFL Draft wide receiver prospect with a lot of potential.

Courtland Sutton is a big-bodied wide receiver prospect who features both good length and bulk. He’s built a lot like Terrell Owens. In fact, there’s a lot of Sutton’s game that mimics the former All-Pro’s playing style.

Outside of the size similarities, Sutton relies on route deception to gain separation. He lacks the elite speed needed to outpace defenders and get behind the defense. Instead, Sutton will uses his size to box out the defender and a stutter step to disguise his route.

His lack of top-end speed is a concern as it will limit his room to work. He may have a rough transition to the NFL because he isn’t a strong enough route runner to overcome his speed limitations. SMU only really asks him to run three routes- a stop, fade and streak with a back shoulder option.

Sutton also needs to be more aggressive when it comes to high-pointing the football. Too often, he allows the ball into his frame resulting in a few drops and giving the defender a chance to break up the pass.

His overall effort and tenacity is a concern. Sutton doesn’t show a passion for blocking and will often fail to get his hands on the defender. There are also times when he runs lazy routes which gave the defensive back better positioning.

Sutton has the size and natural skills to succeed at the next level. However, he also needs time to develop and work on his craft. His overall potential depends on how willing he is to take to coaching.

    Current Draft Status: 4th Round
