2017 NFL Draft: 49ers currently hold second overall pick

As the San Francisco 49ers have for much of this season, the Niners currently hold the second overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft.

If the season ended today, the San Francisco 49ers would hold the second overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft.

That could change as soon as Sunday, as the 1-10 49ers visit the 2-9 Chicago Bears (current holders of the third overall selection). With a loss on Sunday, the 49ers will have a clear inside track on the Number 2 pick, and potentially their quarterback of the future (or an overdrafted bust).

According to SBNation’s draft breakdown, the 49ers have a decent shot at the first overall pick, too — at least for now. The 49ers current strength of schedule (0.517) ranks lower than the winless Cleveland Browns (0.546). The first draft pick tiebreaker for teams with the same record is strength of schedule, with the lower strength of schedule getting the higher pick. Hence, a single win by the Browns could be enough to propel the 49ers to the Number 1 overall pick.

Remember what the 49ers did last time they had that option? They drafted Alex Smith over Aaron Rodgers. While this has been largely criticized, Rodgers would not have developed the same way in San Francisco. And Smith has his Kansas City Chiefs on track for a potential Super Bowl.

Sure doesn’t look like as bad of a pick now. Getting rid of Smith isn’t looking good anymore, however.

Whatever happens, the 49ers will have a high draft pick this Spring. Hopefully they can use it well.
