Utah Jazz: Derrick Favors at Comic Con, EuroBasket Update
Your weekend dish of Utah Jazz news, including Derrick Favors at Salt Lake Comic Con and an update on former Jazzmen playing in EuroBasket qualifiers.
Following their trade of Tibor Pleiss and future picks to the Philadelphia 76ers for cap space, a lot of the talk about the Utah Jazz has centered around a potential contract extension for Derrick Favors. With the Jazz now having just over $12 million in cap space, the team can renegotiate the last two years of his deal and extend the contract.
Otherwise, Favors will likely be looking at a sizeable max contract when his current deal expires after the 2017-18 season.
So while Jazz fans and the hoops press speculate on whether or not the two sides will be able to reach agreement on a deal that is beneficial to both sides, what is the big man doing?
Chilling; hanging out at Salt Lake Comic Con. Naturally.
Here is Favors and the team’s new sideline reporter Kristen Kenney on the convention’s vendor floor meeting the Joker and Harley Quinn, as well as trying on masks–

Favors and Jazz legend Mark Eaton also got to meet WWE superstar John Cena. The Jazz big men are among the very small percentage of the population that actually have the ability to make Cena look small at 6-foot-1 and 260 pounds–

Finally, Favors also got this awesome caricature of himself as Batman from artist Jeff West of Art Dimes at the convention–

It was great to see noted geek D-Faves out and about at Salt Lake Comic Con with myself and tens of thousands of fans this weekend. It was another strong event for Dan Farr Productions, MediaOne and the whole SLCC team.
On a personal note, as much as I love and look forward to the convention, nothing makes me feel older than spending a weekend trekking around the Salt Palace convention center. #BodyPains

Former Jazzmen at Euro Qualifiers
While Favors was taking in the sights and sounds of Salt Lake Comic Con, former Jazz big men Kyrylo Fesenko and Tibor Pleiss were working to secure bids for their home countries into FIBA’s EuroBasket 2017 championship. Ukraine and Germany were both in action on Saturday for the second day of games.
As they did on Day 1 earlier this week, both teams were able to capture victory with Fesenko and Ukraine beating Kosovo 70-63 and Pleiss’ German squad beating Austria 61-59 after a big fourth-quarter comeback. However, the former Jazz centers both had quiet nights on the floor.
Fesenko followed up his 6-for-7 performance on Day 1 by playing just 14 minutes, scoring two points and grabbing four rebounds against Kosovo. Meanwhile, Pleiss had 7 points in 11 minutes of play and hit on his sole attempt from three-point range in Germany’s win.
The former Jazzmen will be back in action for the third day of games on Wednesday, September 7.
