The Celtics can invite some interesting names to training camp
The Boston Celtics have 16 guaranteed contracts currently on their cap sheet, meaning they'll have to shed at least one before the season starts. But they're still able to designate as many as four training camp cuts to their D-League team.
This adds obvious flexibility, and the opportunity to bring really talented players (who aren't quite talented enough) into their system.
Here's more on how the Celtics may take advantage, as tricky as it is, courtesy of ESPN Boston's Chris Forsberg:
"The low-paying nature of the D-League makes it tough to entice prime unsigned talent. In an ideal world, the Celtics would love to take someone like summer league standout Jonathan Holmes and push him through to the D-League with no room for him on the NBA roster. But the undrafted Holmes played so well at summer league that he'll almost certainly be on some NBA radars and can earn a much heftier salary if he's willing to trek overseas should no NBA opportunity immediately arise."
Can the Celtics convince a player like Holmes to stay in their D-League program? It's unlikely, but they'll try to find pieces who rival that talent level.
