The 2008 champs will be immortalized in NBA 2K16
The 2008 Boston Celtics are one of the greatest single-season teams in recent NBA history. Led by Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and Ray Allen—three transformative Hall-of-Fame talents—they won 66 regular season games before toppling the Los Angeles Lakers in the Finals.
One might even call them a "classic" team, and the folks over at 2K Sports would agree. They've decided to add the 2008 Celtics, the 2001 Los Angeles Lakers and the 2000 Toronto Raptors to their "Classic" franchise mode in NBA 2K16: Here's MassLive's Tom Westerholm with more:
"Two Celtics teams were previously Classic teams as well — the 1964-65 Celtics (led by prime Bill Russell), and the 1985-86 Celtics who former ESPN writer Bill Simmons called the greatest team of all time in his The Book of Basketball. Matching Garnett up with Russell, or throwing prime Larry Bird up against Finals MVP Paul Pierce, will be an enormous additional perk of the latest installment in the 2K16 franchise. If 2K really wanted to pander to Celtics fans, they could tinker with the post-game celebrations after the virtual 2008 squad wins a game. Beating your friends AND taunting them by watching Garnett fall down and kiss the Boston Celtics logo at center court is kind of the best of both worlds."
Boston certainly deserves this. One team wins the championship at the end of every season but not every championship team is special. That team was special, going from the worst group in the league to the best in one single year.
It's good to see them get the respect they deserve.
