Report: Manu Ginobili to opt out of his contract with the Spurs

Manu Ginobili is expected to opt out of his contract with the San Antonio Spurs for the 2016-17 season, Yahoo Sports reports. Ginobili has a $2.9 million option for next season.

Ginobili, who turns 39 in July, has been mulling retirement but is expected to return to the Spurs for one more season with a new contract, according to the report.

In 58 games this past season, Ginobili averaged 9.6 points per game, 2.5 rebounds and 3.1 assists -- all career-lows for a full season. He shot 45.3 percent from the field and 39.1 percent from 3-point range.

He also struggled in the playoffs, averaging 6.7 points per game, 2.7 rebounds and 2.5 assists in 10 games against the Memphis Grizzlies and Oklahoma City Thunder.

Ginobili was a second-round pick (57th overall) by San Antonio in 1999 and made his NBA debut in the 2002-03 season. He has spent his entire 14-season NBA career with the Spurs. He has won four NBA championships, is a two-time All-Star and was named the NBA's Sixth Man of the Year for the 2007-08 season.
