Report: Barea wants roughly $3 million per year
It wouldn't be a stretch to call J.J. Barea one of the most beloved players in recent Dallas Mavericks history. After helping spark the franchise to its first championship four years ago, Barea returned to Dallas in the 2014-15 season to rekindle a bit of the magic found during that memorable run to the NBA Finals.
He's a free agent this summer, and as a guard who can get to the rim and shoot threes, he may be in demand. Here's more on what Barea will look to gain on the open market, via ESPN Dallas' Tim MacMahon:
"A source said Barea is hoping to sign a two- or three-year deal that would pay an annual salary in the $3 million range. The Mavs will undoubtedly have a hometown advantage in the Barea contract discussions this summer. He doesn’t attempt to deny that."
Barea is only 30 years old and fresh off a campaign in which he posted the highest PER (15.1) of his career. Will Mark Cuban, an owner who loves cap flexibility, be willing to bring him back on a multi-year deal? It's a question we'll eventually find an answer to in the weeks and months ahead.
