New Pelicans coach Alvin Gentry announces three assistant coaching hires

The coaching staff for the New Orleans Pelicans is starting to take shape, and it's looking like a good one.

You know about new head coach Alvin Gentry, naturally. During his introductory press conference on Monday, Gentry announced the hire of three new assistants.

Darren Erman, a former assistant with the Golden State Warriors known by league insiders as one of the best young defensive and general coaching minds in the NBA, will be Gentry's associate head coach. Gentry said that Erman would handle the defensive duties. As for Erman's famous work ethic: "He'll be [at the team facility] 23 out of 24 hours of the day," Gentry added.

Robert Pack, who was an assistant with the Oklahoma City Thunder last season, will also join Gentry's staff, as will Elvis Valcarcel. Gentry said that he wasn't sure what Valcarcel's title would be, but that if something needs to get done, Valcarcel gets it done. Valcarcel was previously a video coordinator with the Phoenix Suns during Gentry's tenure there.
