Mike D'Antoni interviews for Denver Nuggets head coaching job

By Larry Brown

Could Mike D’Antoni be heading back to Denver?

Yahoo Sports’ Adrian Wojnarowski reports that D’Antoni met with Denver Nuggets GM Tim Connelly Tuesday to discuss the team’s head coaching position. Wojnarowski also says that interim coach Melvin Hunt, who replaced Brian Shaw midseason, is still a strong contender to retain the job.

D’Antoni coached the Nuggets in the ’98-’99 season and went 14-36. He had an extremely successful run as head coach of the Phoenix Suns from 2003-2008. He had disappointing stints as head coach of the Knicks and Lakers, though he did lead each team to the postseason once. The job he did with both teams looks better in retrospect considering how each team has fared since.

In addition to D’Antoni and Hunt, Wojnarowski says former Kings coach Mark Malone has had talks with the Nuggets about the job and could end up getting an interview.
