Local Product Alan Williams Guaranteed for the 2016-17 Season
Alan Williams is now guaranteed a spot on the Phoenix Suns for the 2016-17 seasons (or at least to get paid).
Because Williams has remained on the Suns roster on September 1st, his contract for the upcoming season becomes guaranteed. For an undrafted 6 foot 8 inch center, this is a remarkable achievement.
Williams is now guaranteed $874,636 for the 2016-17 season. The 2017-18 season is still not guaranteed in Williams contract, and would be worth just over $1.2 million.
Given the Suns depth at center already, featuring Alex Len and Tyson Chandler, Williams is projected to have a limited role.
This will be the first time Williams is entering a season on a roster with a guaranteed spot in the NBA. Prior to this, Williams has travelled the basketball world, and dominated the boards at every stop.
The big man recently dominated the Las Vegas Summer League for the second straight year. Williams led that event in rebounding for consecutive seasons.
Williams also played in the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA) in the 2015-16 season, leading the league in rebounding with 15.4 rebounds per game.
The fact that Michael Beasley averaged 13.2 rebounds per game doesn’t appear to make Williams’ total that impressive. However, Williams only played 30 minutes a game, compared to Beasley’s 36.
William’s 18.5 rebounds per 36 minutes led the CBA by 3.6 boards, or nearly 25%.
Now, Williams will get a chance to prove that his production in very limited minutes last season in the NBA was not a fluke, or a product of playing garbage time.
Small sample size matters, but the Phoenix product averaged just over 20 rebounds per 36 minutes in 2015-16. Dennis Rodman would be impressed by that kind of production.
Alan Williams will get his shot to establish himself with the Phoenix Suns. Based on his past performances, expect the big man to get plenty of rebounds.
