J.J. Avila will play on the Houston Rockets' summer league squad

J.J. Avila was a stellar scorer at Colorado State last season. He has good size, is versatile and made more two-point baskets than any player in his conference.

Apparently the four-year player performed well enough to earn himself a spot on the Houston Rockets' summer league team, according to The Coloradoan:

"Avila had been practicing with the Rockets all week on a tryout basis and had been repeatedly asking coaches when they'd announce who made the team. At 7 p.m., he received a text message shortly after leaving Houston's facility with good news. 'Honestly, the practices are pretty tough, so I was pretty tired, but when I got the text I got butterflies in my stomach. I won't lie, I was excited," Avila said. "I've been working hard to make a summer league team. There are a bunch of great guys on this team right now and I think we'll be really good.'"

Avila isn't a three-point shooter, which makes Houston's interest surprising. But it's not like the team signed him to its regular season roster. Summer league is designed for teams to take a flier on fringe talents like Avila.

He has the next 10 days to show why he deserves a bigger opportunity.
