How Rick Carlisle has developed his coaching tree

Dallas Mavericks head coach Rick Carlisle has plenty of impressive individual accomplishments. He's just one of four active coaches to have won a championship, and he's only had one losing season in 13 years as a head coach. His .590 career winning percentage is also one of the best of any active coach.

Over time, Carlisle's success and style has spread out across the league, as former assistants like Portland Trail Blazers coach Terry Stotts and Toronto Raptors head coach Dwane Casey have led playoff teams out on their own.

Here's what Carlisle told Mavs.com about his strategy when it comes to developing his coaches:

“I’m grooming everybody on our support staff to be a head coach,” Carlisle said. “I expect our video guys to view the game like head coaches. I’ve always encouraged (assistants), and I’ve always gone out and tried to hire guys that were head-coaching material. The track record is there. I’ve got a lot of guys that have gone on to become successful head coaches. That’s how you have a more potent staff of guys that aren’t just dialed into one little area. They need to see the game as a big picture.”
