Former Utah Jazz G/F Quincy Ford Signs With New Orleans Pelicans

Four days after getting cut from the Utah Jazz preseason roster, rookie wing Quincy Ford has signed with the New Orleans Pelicans.

When he was waived by the Utah Jazz alongside Marcus Paige and Eric Dawson last week, the prevailing belief was that Quincy Ford would end up with the team’s D-League affiliate, the Salt Lake City Stars. Our network’s resident D-League guru, Chris Reichert of Upside Motor, even reported as much.

However, the New Orleans Pelicans may have altered Utah’s plans.

The Pelicans announced on Monday that Ford has inked a deal to join New Orleans’ roster to close out the preseason. Terms of the contract were undisclosed, but Eric Pincus of Basketball Insiders is reporting it as a non-guaranteed deal for just over $540,000.

Ford had played in just one game for the Jazz in the preseason, scoring two points against the Phoenix Suns. But he also played eight games with the team during summer league in both Salt Lake City and Las Vegas, averaging 5.1 points, 5.2 rebounds and one assist per contest.

After touching base with him shortly after the 2016 NBA Draft, the Jazz had signed the 6-foot-8 guard-forward to a deal last month. Ford received a partial guarantee of $75,000 to join the team’s camp roster.

The word around Jazzland has been that the team is intrigued by his NBA body, athleticism and potential as both a shooter and a defender.

Apparently they weren’t the only ones.

More from Purple and Blues

The 23-year-old Ford played his college ball at Northeastern. In his senior season, he averaged 16.4 points, 7.0 rebounds and 1.5 steals in 34.8 minutes per contest. He earned an All-Colonial Athletic Association Second Team selection for his efforts.

We’ll keep you updated on Ford’s status in the coming weeks. He’s a guy that some of us at Purple & Blues considered a player to watch in the D-League this season. Hopefully he still finds his way to the Stars if he doesn’t stick with the Pels.
