Former Spur David West does not want to be called a ring chaser
Former San Antonio Spurs big-man David West is entering his 14th season, he states he only cares about winning — and about learning from the game’s elite, so don’t you dare call him a ring chaser.
West played just one season in San Antonio where he was looking to win his first NBA title of his career. Well, San Antonio fans know how last season went.
During the offseason, West bolted from San Antonio to join the Golden State Warriors, again, not to chase a ring but to join and learn from the games elite. But in West’s mind, he did not believe he would end up in Oakland on a minimum contract, his second in two years.
West turned down millions before joining the Spurs for the 2015-16 season. Now, being on a team alined with the leagues Most Valuable Player Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, Draymond Green and the most prized possession of all of free agency Kevin Durant, the Warriors are a favorite to win a title.
Remember what was said, do not call West a ring chaser.
In truth, West didn’t even expect to be playing basketball at age 36.
“I had a plan,” West says. “Ten years. That was it. I was going to play 10 years in the league, try to accomplish whatever I could accomplish in that span, and then I was done. Period. No matter what.”
Now getting ready to begin year 14 of his career, West told The Indianapolis Star that he never wanted to chase a ring.
“I’m not going to be one of those guys that’s just out here chasing that,” he said. “I’m not going to be one of those guys out here sacrificing who I am, the things that make me me, to go out and get a material goal.”
So, why continue to play the game at the age of 36, if a ring is not that important to you? Why join a team that is loaded with weapons, equipped for winning a title? But yet, you don’t want to be called a ring chaser. It has all indications what West is trying to do in his career. There is nothing wrong with it.
He needs to face the facts, he went from a title contender in the San Antonio Spurs to now the Golden State Warriors in just one year between one another, but we get it, he just wants to play and learn from the elite.
We understand West, you maybe the only one in the league that does not care about winning a title.
