Former Charlotte Hornets' Player, Jorge Gutierrez, Signs With the Brooklyn Nets
After spending the second half of the 2015-16 season with the Charlotte Hornets, Jorge Gutierrez has now signed with the Brooklyn Nets.
According to Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports and The Vertical, “Free agent guard Jorge Gutierrez has agreed to a training camp deal with the Brooklyn Nets.” He spent last season with the Charlotte Hornets as their third string point guard. After not be re-signed this summer, Gutierrez become an unrestricted free agent.
The former Hornets’ player will now be following in the footsteps of Jeremy Lin as he joins the Brooklyn Nets. Lin also joined the team this offseason after playing for Charlotte last year. Jorge originally signed a 10-day contract with the team on February 20th of the 2016 campaign.
After trading Brian Roberts at the trade deadline, the Hornets were in need of an emergency point guard and Gutierrez filled that role for the remainder of the season. Steve Clifford praised Jorge after the team signed him to a permanent deal after two 10-day contracts. He was rarely used but proved to be an important asset to the team last year.
More from Swarm and Sting
The contract that Gutierrez signed with the Nets is a training camp deal that will give him a chance to battle for a final roster spot before the regular season begins. This will be his second career sting in Brooklyn after he signed with the team back in 2014. He has also played for the Milwaukee Bucks in his three years of NBA service.
The 6’3 point guard averaged 1.8 points per game, 1.4 assists per game, and 0.6 rebounds per game this past season. He appeared in 12 games for Charlotte but those all came in the closing stages of blowout games. Jorge shot 54.5% from the field and 90.9% from the free throw line.
The University of California alumni will likely play with the Nets during the preseason as he will look to impressive the organization. Unfortunately, Brooklyn will not be playing against the Charlotte Hornets during the preseason. It is great that Gutierrez will be getting another shot at making an NBA roster and we wish him the best of luck. He was part of one of the most successful team’s in Charlotte in recent history.
The 27-year old point guard has NBA experience but it is unlikely that he will make the Nets’ final roster this season. Most players that sign training camp deals are only brought in to help compete against the players who will be on the final roster. Although, anything could happen and Jorge Gutierrez could impress Brooklyn enough to sign him long-term.
