Charlotte Hornets: Xavier Munford to Join Greensboro Swarm
After being cut by the Los Angeles Clippers, Xavier Munford is set to join the Charlotte Hornets’ D-League affiliate in the Greensboro Swarm.
According to David Pick, “Xavier Munford, cut from Clippers, to join Hornets D-League affiliate, Greensboro Swarm” this season. The news has also been reported from other sources such as D-League guru, Chris Reichert. The Charlotte Hornets have now added yet another name to their NBA Developmental League roster.
David Pick is also reporting that the Greensboro Swarm traded a future first round pick to acquire Munford. This is the inaugural season for the Hornets’ affiliate and Xavier will be joining Perry Ellis on the squad. A few other names are rumored to be on the team but nothing has yet been confirmed.
After going undrafted in the 2014 NBA draft out of the University of Rhode Island, he spent time in the D-League with the Bakersfield Jam from 2014 to 2016. Munford played with the Los Angeles Lakers Summer League team in 2015-16 and re-joined them again this summer. He was a D-League all-star and averaged 20.5 points, 4.1 rebounds, 6.4 assists per game.
More from Swarm and Sting
He was signed by the Memphis Grizzlies last season but his deal was not extended for the 2016-17 NBA year. The Los Angeles Clippers had Xavier on their training camp roster and he appeared in two preseason games with the team. They do not have a D-League team so Munford was a free agent without a D-League team once he was released.
The 24-year old shooting guard averaged 5.7 points per game, 2.2 rebounds per game, and 1.6 assists per game with the Grizzlies last season. He appeared in 14 games with Memphis and played 17.4 minutes per game. Xavier also shot 41.6% from the field and 39.1% from the three-point line.
Munford has proven that he can play in the league and has the ability to perform at a high level. He will now be getting his shot with the Swarm to prove himself and possibly impress the Hornets’ organization.
The Charlotte Hornets’ D-League roster is starting to fill out with Rasheed Sulaimon, Mike Tobey, and even Aaron Harrison possibly joining the team. The Greensboro Swarm will have a strong squad with plenty of talented players this season. Keep an eye on them because the Hornets may call up a few players in the future.
