Boston Celtics Waive John Holland

The Boston Celtics announced that they waived John Holland

John Holland signed a two-year deal with the Boston Celtics at the end of last season. He only appeared in one game during the playoffs, playing one minute and missing his only field-goal attempt – a three-pointer. Holland was set to make $874K this season, but the Boston Celtics waived the 27-year-old small forward, per Shams Charania.

Holland played at Boston University, which made headlines once the Celtics signed him last year. He played four seasons at Boston, averaging 19.2 points and 5.8 rebounds per game as a senior in 2010-11.

Holland has never been able to crack an NBA rotation, which likely means the small forward will play overseas in 2016-17.

Holland was a long shot to make the roster this season, but the Celtics cutting him prior to training camp does come with a little surprise. Their roster is now down to 18 players heading into training camp. There is always a chance he sticks with the Maine Red Claws, but Holland will need to try to latch onto another team if he wants another NBA shot.

This was the easiest cut for the Boston Celtics this summer. They’ll need to cut three more players to get their roster down to the maximum of 15 players by the start of the season.
