76ers star Joel Embiid undergoes knee surgery, out at least four weeks

Reigning NBA MVP Joel Embiid underwent surgery to repair an injury to his left meniscus on Tuesday, according to ESPN. 

Embiid will be out at least four weeks as the 76ers gave their first timeline on the All-Star center's injury. He'll be reevaluated at that time.

There is still hope that Embiid can return at some point this season, although the next few weeks of rehab are "paramount" in making that a possibility, ESPN reported.

Embiid injured his knee Tuesday in a 119-107 loss to Golden State. He underwent an MRI that revealed the injury.

While the upcoming All-Star break helps the 76ers, they've been reeling as of late. They've lost six of their last seven games, most of which came without Embiid, as they've fallen to fifth place in the Eastern Conference standings. 

The 76ers dropped to 4-11 in games without Embiid this season with their 118-102 home loss to the Mavericks on Monday night.

Embiid already has missed 15 games this season, all but ending his chances of being eligible for a second straight MVP award. The new collective bargaining agreement requires players, in most instances, to play in 65 regular-season games to be eligible for awards such as MVP or the All-NBA teams.

When healthy, Embiid has continued to perform at an MVP level. He is the NBA’s leading scorer at 35.3 points per game and is averaging 11.3 rebounds and 5.7 assists. He scored a franchise-record 70 points to go along with 18 rebounds on Jan. 22 in a 133-124 victory over San Antonio.
