Vote now: Does Carl Edwards belong in the NASCAR Hall of Fame?

In a press conference Wednesday morning, Carl Edwards confirmed what FOXSports.com first reported Tuesday, that he is leaving Joe Gibbs Racing and won't race in 2017. He also stated that he has no plans to race full-time again.

If this is truly the end of Edwards' career, a logical question is: Does Carl Edwards belong in the NASCAR Hall of Fame?

Before we jump to any answers, let's take a look at his career stats.

Edwards finished in the top three in the XFINITY Series in six-straight seasons, won the 2007 XFINITY Series championship, and posted 38 wins in NASCAR's AAA level. He added six wins in the Camping World Truck Series in two years of full-time competition in the Trucks.

In 2005, he started racing full-time in the Cup Series and finished third in the points standings in his first season. He came close to winning the championship several times, including 2011, when he tied Tony Stewart for the trophy, but lost out due to a tiebreaker on wins.

Overall, Edwards finished in the top-five in the standings six times in his 13-year career. He won 28 races, posted 124 top-five and 220 top-10 finishes with a career average finish of 13.6

His 28 Cup Series wins put him above several Hall of Fame members like Fred Lorenzen, Joe Weatherly, Benny Parsons, and Terry Labonte. Outside of Lorenzen, all of those drivers won at least one Cup Series championship, though.
