Report: Yunick's legendary garage gone

Legendary race car builder Smokey Yunick’s former garage was destroyed by fire Monday, according to the Daytona Beach News-Journal.

The building, which Yunick termed the “Best Damn Garage in Town,” was in Daytona Beach, Fla., and was the last remaining sign of the innovative mechanic. According to the story, the garage complex caught fire around 7 p.m. Monday night. Little remains except portions of the block walls.

Yunick died in 2001 at the age of 77. He built winning race cars on the Sprint Cup and Indy circuits throughout his career. He won the Daytona 500 with Marvin Panch and Fireball Roberts. He was the chief mechanic for Herb Thomas, who won what is now the Winston Cup titles in 1951 and ’53.
