New 'Vulcan' trophy will be awarded to winner at Talladega

The winner of Sunday’s Hellmann’s 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Talladega Superspeedway will add a cool new trophy to their collection.

On Thursday, the speedway unveiled the “Vulcan” Trophy, a miniature version of the famous cast-iron statue that overlooks the city of nearby Birmingham, Alabama.

“There is no other race track in the world like Talladega, and now we can say there is no other trophy in the world like the Talladega Vulcan Trophy,” said track chairman Grant Lynch. “This trophy represents so much of what our venue is about: big, bold and tough.”

The trophy is a replica of the 56-foot statue, which holds the record for the largest cast-iron statue in the world. It’s 36-inches tall and weighs in at an incredible 80 pounds.

Not only will the winning driver need the nerves to wheel their race car to the checkered flag in Sunday's Chase for the Sprint Cup elimination race, but they’ll also need the muscle to lift the trophy in Victory Lane.
