NASCAR community mourns passing of Bob Margolis, Herbert Ames

The NASCAR community is poorer this week with passing of two legends of the garage, reporter Bob Margolis and long-time insider Herbert Ames, both of whom were fixtures in the sport for many years.

Margolis was a first-rate writer and reporter, someone who called it exactly like saw it. And he was someone who never said no to a young reporters trying to navigate the complicated NASCAR landscape. In that regard, he stood out.

Ames was a constant presence at NASCAR races, where he was close friends with the late NASCAR Communications Director. Ames did a lot of work on behalf of the sport and was one of the most gregarious people in the sport.

If you walked up to him and asked what he did in the sport, he'd bellow loudly and say, "Whatever the hell I want to do!"

We here at FOXSports.com join with the rest of the NASCAR community in sending our thoughts and prayers to the families of Bob and Herbert.
