Ferrari chief rebukes Alonso criticism

The president of Ferrari has criticized Fernando Alonso in a move that could open a rift between the Italian team and the two-time Formula One champion.

Luca Di Montezemolo says Alonso should know that ''all the great champions who have driven for Ferrari have always been asked to put the needs of the team ahead of their own interests.''

Alonso is third in the drivers' standings after finishing on the podium only twice since winning the Spanish Grand Prix in May.

He criticized the car after finishing fifth in Hungary on Sunday, and Ferrari says on its website that ''we must stop these outbursts. ... Alonso's comments weren't liked by Montezemolo or the team.''

Alonso has been linked with Red Bull, with Mark Webber leaving the Austrian team at the end of the season.
