Erik Jones takes out JGR XFINITY teammate Daniel Suarez
In a flash, Erik Jones went from battling for the lead to fighting to get back in the top five in Friday night's Food City 300 at Bristol Motor Speedway.
But after stalling his No. 20 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota on pit road, costing him several spots, it quickly went from bad to much, much worse for Jones.
Impatient to get back up toward the front of the field after restarting ninth, Jones ended up wrecking his own JGR teammate, Daniel Suarez, taking out both contenders for the XFINITY Series win on the 0.533-mile short track.
"I just made a mistake," Jones admitted. "I basically just turned the 19 (of Suarez). It's unfortunate. I feel bad for Daniel and I feel bad for this team and my guys."
Jones ended up finishing 33rd. Suarez finished 30th.
"It was a wreckfest," Suarez said. "I don't know what to say. It's just really unfortunate."
Suarez had rallied from a slow start and was running fifth when the accident occurred on Lap 244 of the race that was scheduled to go 300 laps but ended up going to overtime.
"We had a very hard first half of the race and we were pretty off with the balance," Suarez said. "We finally got it decent and we were a top-five car and then that happened. I don't really have a lot to say."
It was a blow to both JGR teams, but will not affect their status as far as qualifying for the inaugural XFINITY Series Chase to the championship. Both are locked in by virtue of wins earlier this season. Jones owns a series-high three wins, while Suarez has one.
