Davey Allison's son, Robbie, the star of new documentary on FS1
For a son, there are few more daunting challenges than following in the footsteps of a famous father.
And when that father is taken from you too soon, and after his passing, he grows from a star to a larger-than-life legend, that makes the task all that much more difficult. No one knows that better than Robbie Allison, the son of the late NASCAR superstar Davey Allison.
"I've spent a lot of my life trying to figure out what's a healthy way for me to experience my dad," says Robbie Allison, star of the new short-film series called "Beyond the Wheel," which debuted Sept. 23 on FS1's "NASCAR Race Hub."
"Beyond the Wheel" offers an inside look at the most compelling people, stories and traditions within NASCAR. Few, if any, families have experienced the combination of elation and devastation that the Allisons have. The first episode of this new series is called "Chasing Davey," and it chronicles the journey of Robbie Allison, now 23 years old, to connect with his late father.
"Chasing Davey" is poignant, emotional and deeply personal.
Featured in the documentary are interviews with Robbie Allison, Liz Allison (Robbie's mother and Davey's widow), Bobby Allison (Davey's father/Robbie's grandfather), Judy Allison (Davey's mother/Robbie's grandmother), Lorin Ranier (family friend and mentor) and Chuck Hughes (family friend). The special also includes two Allison family home movie clips. Three subsequent "Beyond the Wheel" films air on "NASCAR Race Hub" on Wednesday, Sept. 30, Oct. 7 and Oct. 21 on FS1 at 6 p.m. ET.
