After two surgeries in two hospitals, Kyle Busch finally resting at home
Six days after being involved in a harrowing crash in the NASCAR XFINITY Series race at Daytona International Speedway, Kyle Busch is finally back in his North Carolina home.
Busch was injured in the closing laps of last Saturday's race when his car went headfirst into an infield wall at the end of the Daytona frontstretch. The section of the wall Busch hit was not protected by a SAFER barrier.
Saturday night, Busch had his first of two surgical procedures to repair a compound fracture of his lower right leg. That surgery was performed at Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach.
On Wednesday, Busch underwent surgery for a mid-foot fracture of his left foot, with Dr. Robert Anderson of OrthoCarolina in Charlotte performing the procedure.
Friday morning, Busch was released from the hospital and taken home.
"Two surgeries, two hospitals, one very long week! So grateful we finally get to go home! Thank you God," tweeted Busch's wife, Samantha, Friday morning. The couple are expecting their first child in May.
Two-time NASCAR Camping World Truck Series champion Matt Crafton replaced Busch in the Daytona 500, finishing 18th in the No. 18 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota.
This weekend at Atlanta Motor Speedway and until Busch returns, David Ragan will substitute for him. Ragan's car is carrying a "Get Well Kyle!" message on its rear fascia this weekend.
When Busch comes back -- the date of which has yet to be determined -- Ragan will return to his No. 34 Front Row Motorsports Ford. Joe Nemechek is filling in for Ragan with Front Row this weekend.
Daytona President Joie Chitwood III said the section of the wall where Busch hit will be covered by a SAFER barrier when the next NASCAR race weekend takes place in July.
In the wake of Busch's accident, most of the tracks where the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races announced they will add SAFER barriers and/or other protective measures to improve driver safety.
