Will Power goes back-to-back with dominant win at Road America

On Sunday, Will Power picked up his second consecutive victory in the 2016 Verizon IndyCar Series.

Power dominated the 50-lap Kohler Grand Prix at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, which marked IndyCar’s return to the popular 4-mile road course.

For the first 39 laps, the race was incident free, although some drivers fell upon misfortune. One such driver was Scott Dixon, whose car coasted to a halt from second place on Lap 7.

Simon Pagenaud had just worked his way up into second position during the final round of pit stops when a full course caution flew on Lap 39. The lower left wishbone failed on Conor Daly’s machine, sending him into the wall. Daly was OK.

This set the field up for a six-lap shootout in the end, in which Power got off to a solid restart, putting a solid gap between himself and his teammate Pagenaud. Pagenaud then quickly dropped back through the field, with Tony Kanaan and Graham Rahal moving up into the podium positions. Kanaan closed in on Power on the final lap, but then Power used two push-to-pass power boosts to build back up his lead.

Behind them, Helio Castroneves looked to challenge for a podium finish but then was forced to drop back and relinquish a spot after blocking earlier in the race. Josef Newgarden pulled off a solid 8th-place finish just two weeks after his dramatic crash at Texas Motor Speedway.
