Tomac wins East Rutherford SX; Musquin claims first 250 title

Eli Tomac put in a superb ride on Saturday to claim his third 450SX Monster Energy Supercross victory of the season.

The GEICO Honda rider passed Cole Seely for the lead on Lap 14 and quickly pulled a gap over the field, ultimately claiming the victory over newly-crowned champion Ryan Dungey inside MetLife Stadium. Seely held on to finish third.

"I just tried to be as consistent as I could and keep it on two wheels, and I started to close in on Cole," said Tomac. "He made a couple mistakes that allowed me to get on his rear fender and I just pulled the trigger in the whoops. Once I got out front I was able to just get through lappers and bring it home."

Both Tomac and Dungey were outside of the top five after the first turn, but worked their way through the field to secure another one-two finish.

Rookie Blake Baggett brought his Suzuki home in fourth - tying his best career finish (Arlington). Andrew Short, Broc Tickle, Josh Grant, Kyle Chisholm, Jason Anderson and Weston Peick rounded out the top 10.

Two-time Supercross champion Chad Reed did not race on Saturday, later tweeting: "My shoulder I had surgery on last year is the problem. Re-hurt it in last weekend's crashes. Will get MRI Monday. Deciding not to race is never an easy decision but feel it was best option for my health and the fast approaching (Motorcross) nationals."

In the 250SX Eastern Regional Class, it was all Marvin Musquin as he scored the race victory as well as the 250SX East Championship.

"It feels great and winning the main event makes it even better," said Musquin. "Every time you race you want to do good, and today I made it happen. I'm ready to move on and chase some more dreams.

"It has been great to race alongside Ryan this season with all his success and it's helped me get better as well. We have a great team at KTM and I'm excited to keep it going."

It is the second championship this season for Red Bull KTM, as Musquin joins teammate Dungey as a title winner in 2015.

Rival Justin Bogle tried to take the fight to Musquin, but was forced to settle for second in the race and in the championship battle. Joey Savatgy finished third for Kawasaki.

Next weekend in Las Vegas, the 250SX East riders will go head-to-head with the 250SX West riders in a winner-take-all shootout.
