Bourdais had gone over 231 mph on his first two laps; faster than any 18 cars who had gone before him.

However, on Lap 3 the rear end of his No. 18 Dale Coyne Racing Honda stepped out exiting Turn 2, and then he overcorrected and hit the SAFER barrier on the outside wall. The car caught fire and rolled over before coming to a halt down the backstraight.

The red flag was displayed and the safety crew extracted him from his vehicle and placed him on a backboard before taking him to the Indiana University Methodist Hospital in an ambulance.

Qualifying was resumed.
