Sebastian Vettel jokingly blames a pair of seagulls for costing him a win in Canada
Lewis Hamilton won the Canadian Grand Prix Sunday despite a horrific start that saw him lose the lead to Sebastian Vettel and force his teammate Nico Rosberg off the track, thanks in large part to Ferrari's gamble to employ a two-stop strategy while Hamilton ran the entire race in one pit stop. Vettel, however, is blaming a very brave pair of seagulls that may or may not have cost him time in Turn 1 at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve just before his first pit stop.
Vettel led Hamilton up until a virtual safety car period brought out by Jenson Button, whose McLaren-Honda suffered an engine failure. Ferrari chose to have Vettel pit immediately, but just before the race was slowed Vettel had a front wheel lockup when - according to him - he noticed two seagulls in the middle of the track just past the apex of Turn 1. In the cool-down room after the race, Vettel could be heard joking that Hamilton only caught him because he didn't brake for the seagulls.
Vettel then crashed a post-race interview Hamilton was doing with Sky Sports F1 to rib him over his apparent disregard for the wildlife of Montreal.
Sky Sports eventually found a replay of Vettel locking up into Turn 1, and Hamilton cracked up.
