Rain delay causes change to Indianapolis 500 qualifying procedure

Following a lengthy rain delay at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, IndyCar is altering the qualifying procedure for Saturday’s qualifying session.

Saturday serves as the opening day of qualifying - where all 33 cars get to turn multiple attempts around the speedway to see whether they can make the Fast Nine, or whether they’ll be starting somewhere between 10th and 33rd. The times are then wiped and the drivers go out again on Sunday

However, due to the rain delay, each driver will just have one attempt at qualifying on Saturday. The drivers who turn the top nine times will get to fight for the top nine spots on Sunday, while those who turn the 10th-33rd fastest times will fight for those spots on Sunday.

Saturday's qualifying session is expected to run from 4 - 6 p.m. ET.
