Pascal Wehrlein fit to drive Sauber for the first time on Tuesday

Pascal Wehrlein will get behind the wheel of the Sauber C36 for the first time when F1 testing resumes in Barcelona on Tuesday.

The German has been fighting to regain fitness and pass a medical check following his accident at the Race of Champions in Miami, where he crashed after contact with Felipe Massa.

On Sunday, he Tweeted a picture from a gym, saying he was “working hard to come back soon.” Then, after an official confirmation from Sauber on Monday he added: “Green light for tomorrow! Can't wait to be on track!”

Ferrari reserve driver Antonio Giovinazzi stood in for Wehrlein at the first Barcelona test last week, and made a good impression.

The Italian remains on standby this week should Wehrlein have any issues once he’s been in the car and experienced the G-forces associated with this year’s high downforce regulations.
