Lewis Hamilton fears 'boring' Monaco GP due to tires
Lewis Hamilton fears a boring race in Monaco, despite the addition of the ultrasoft tire to Pirelli's range.
Hamilton says that the tire is still not soft enough to impact strategy, with one stop likely to be the default choice.
“Unfortunately most likely it's going to be exactly the same as it was before,” he said when asked about the ultrasoft. “There are no real great decisions that are going to be made that are going to make this race any better. The last two, three, four years it's been a one-stop race, which is the most boring... So everyone here knows that pole position, mostly they are going to win. A one-stop race, so it's a procession.
“I was messaging with a friend the other day, and he said I'm not coming to Monaco, because it's a train. I was like, I'm going to be in it, hopefully at the front of the train! I was just thinking last night how cool the track looks at night. Why don't we have two races here? Why don't we have more stops? The ultra soft is not really a soft. We need ultra, ultra, ultra, ultra, ultra, at least four times softer tires, so we can do more stops. It mixes it up more, and there are all these safety cars.
“My first years [in Monaco], when there were more stops, were way more exciting. But they won't do that. We're going to be two seconds faster this year than we were last year, but overtaking is going to be the same.”
