Gus Dean wins ARCA Series race at Talladega

TALLADEGA, Ala. (AP) Gus Dean won the ARCA Series race Friday at Talladega Superspeedway when officials called the race three laps from the finish because of impending darkness.

An accident brought out the caution with three to go Friday, but ARCA said it was too dark to go back to green. The race was finished under caution.

Dean and Josh Williams were door-to-door when the caution waived, and ARCA officials had to check timing and scoring before giving Dean the win by a nose.

The 21-year-old Dean, from Bluffton, South Carolina, won for Mason Mitchell Motorsports.

''The car was a top-notch car all day. It got really hairy there at the end,'' said Dean, the third straight first-time winner in the series. ''We worked the track right.''

Williams was upset after the race.

''Clearly twice we were leading today but the higher-ups didn't want us to win today,'' said Williams, who motioned toward race control.

Chase Briscoe finished third.
