Custom cars reign supreme on opening day of Barrett-Jackson

Custom cars ruled the opening day of the Seventh Annual Barrett-Jackson Las Vegas Collector Auction.

While an ex-Richard Petty Motorsports NASCAR Sprint Cup Series charity car was the top seller overall at $100,000, many of the rest of the top 10 sellers were customized muscle cars and pickup trucks.

Tops on the list of non-charity cars was Lot 191, a Pro Touring-style 1968 Chevrolet Chevelle SS, which hammered for $68,000 plus 10 percent buyer's premiums. The extensively modified car, which began life as a real SS, featured a modern Chevrolet crate engine and a long list of modifications.

Close behind at a hammer price of $59,000, was Lot 180, a 2009 Dodge Challenger SRT8 custom coupe built for the annual SEMA show, which takes place every November in Las Vegas. Known as "Backdraft," it featured a striking flamed paint job.

Two vehicles hammered at $50,000 each, Lot 169, a 1969 custom Chevrolet pickup truck that had just been restored, and Lot 177, a 1932 Ford Hi-Boy custom roadster.
