Gordon double earns TFC point from former team
Alan Gordon scored the second of his two goals in stoppage time to help Toronto FC salvage a 2-2 draw with his former Los Angeles Galaxy teammates on Saturday night.
''To get it against my former team, in the 94th minute, of course it was special,'' said Gordon, who spent the first seven years of his MLS career with the Galaxy.
Juan Pablo Angel put the Galaxy ahead with a goal in the 90th minute.
Toronto answered in the waning moments of extra time when Gordon finished a volley from inside the box that found the upper-right corner of the net. He celebrated the equalizer emphatically by running and sliding toward the sideline, before his teammates piled on top of him.
''We kept going. You've got to give us credit,'' Gordon said. ''We had one last push. And we were fortunate to get a goal.''
Chris Birchall scored in the second minute for the Galaxy (8-2-7), unbeaten in their last eight games.
''We worked so hard to get that second goal and to lose our concentration at the end is disappointing,'' Galaxy coach Bruce Arena said.
Gordon, who missed the previous six games because of a groin injury, helped Toronto (2-5-8) earn its fourth tie in the past five games. Gordon entered as a substitute in the 44th minute and finished a second-half cross from Danleigh Borman with a header to tie it at 1.
''I felt like I was ready to go, I was wanting to play the whole time,'' Gordon said. ''I just didn't know if my soccer fitness was going to be up to par. But it was OK. I've been working hard in the gym.''
The Galaxy had gone 521 minutes between goals allowed, the second-longest stretch in team history.
''When you score a goal that late, we thought we had won,'' Galaxy midfielder David Beckham said. ''It happens, but we have to be a bit smarter than that.''
Los Angeles was minus three starters for the match. Captain Landon Donovan and goalie Donovan Ricketts are playing with their national teams, and midfielder Juninho was in Brazil getting married.
Beckham picked up a yellow card in the 29th minute with a hard slide from behind on Tony Tchani. Beckham's next yellow will be his eighth of the season and earn him a one-game ban for card accumulation.
Toronto was forced to make a pair of rare first-half substitutions because of injuries. Tchani appeared to hurt his left ankle on the hard tackle, and Jacob Peterson exited because of tightness in a hamstring.
