Galaxy now 'open' to Beckham move

After initially being in the dark about David Beckham’s plans to go back to Europe on another loan move, the Los Angeles Galaxy appear ready to consider letting the English star go for a third loan deal in three years for the right price.

According to Sky Sports, the Los Angeles Galaxy is open to the idea of sending Beckham on a short-term loan deal, with Tottenham looking like the most likely destination for the 35-year-old midfielder.

Galaxy officials had no new information on a potential Beckham loan when reached on Wednesday.

The Galaxy initially sounded against the idea of sending Beckham out on loan for the third straight spring, an understandable stance given the fact that Beckham suffered a torn achilles tendon while on loan with AC Milan last year. The club’s tune appears to have changed, with money looking to be the determining factor in any potential move.

Several clubs have been reported to have interest in Beckham, but Tottenham has emerged as the most likely destination for Beckham, who is believed to prefer joining a London club.

If Beckham is to join Tottenham, the real question is for how long. Spurs manager Harry Redknapp was recently quoted as saying he would only be interested in bringing Beckham on loan if it were for the remainder of the Premier League season. That would force Beckham to miss the first half of the Major League Soccer season, which begins in early March.

Beckham, who is entering the final year of a five-year contract with the Galaxy, has managed just 48 regular season appearances for the Galaxy since joining the club in 2007. A knee injury cut short his first season with the club, while loans to AC Milan cut into his past two seasons. Perhaps a more damning stat regarding Beckham’s contributions for Los Angeles is that he has played more combined matches for AC Milan and England over the past two years than he has for the Galaxy.

As has been the case the past two years, Beckham has cited a desire to remain fit enough for consideration for the England national team as the motivation behind these loan moves. That explanation has done little to stop a wave of criticism in the United States aimed at Beckham’s latest loan request.
