Yordano Ventura suspended 9 games, Manny Machado gets 4 after Royals-Orioles brawl

Yordano Ventura has received a nine-game suspension and a fine for plunking Manny Machado and spurring Tuesday's bench-clearing brawl between the Kansas City Royals and the Baltimore Orioles.

Orioles shortstop Machado was suspended four games for charging the mound and swinging at the Royals pitcher. He also was fined $2,500, according to USA Today's Bob Nightengale

"It's just kind of tough when you have to play short because of something that someone else kind of got going," Orioles manager Buck Showalter said before Thursday night's game at Toronto.

In the fifth inning of Tuesday's game, Machado took exception to Ventura's 99-mph fastball to his back and punched Ventura in the face as both benches cleared.

This is the second straight season Ventura has been suspended. In April 2015, after the Royals pitcher got into it with Angels slugger Mike Trout and then was ejected for drilling then-Athletics infielder Brett Lawrie with a fastball, Ventura caused another bench-clearing incident while sparring with White Sox outfielder Adam Eaton after fielding a hard comebacker. He drew a seven-game ban for that incident.
