Yanks waiting before putting Jeter on DL
The New York Yankees are still waiting to decide whether to put shortstop Derek Jeter on the disabled list.
Yankees manager Joe Girardi says Jeter will need at least a week to recover from his strained right calf, an injury Monday night that delayed his pursuit of 3,000 career hits. A move could come before Tuesday night's game against Texas.
The Yankees said they wanted to talk to a doctor and Jeter before making a decision.
Jeter hurt himself during a flyout in the fifth inning against Cleveland and immediately left the game with 2,994 hits. An MRI exam revealed a Grade I sprain, the mildest kind.
Jeter has not been on the DL since 2003. The Yankees plan to call up Triple-A Ramiro Pena, just in case.
