Yankees turn rare triple play

The New York Yankees turned a triple play to quash a rally by the Baltimore Orioles in the eighth inning Friday night, just their second since 1969.

With runners on first and second, Manny Machado hit a sharp liner that second baseman Robinson Cano caught on a hop. He tossed it to shortstop Jayson Nix for the forceout. Nick Markakis, thinking the ball was going to be caught by Cano, got caught in a rundown between second and third base.

Third baseman Kevin Youkilis tagged Markakis and then threw to first baseman Lyle Overbay when Machado ranged too far off first. Overbay then threw to Cano, who tagged Machado.

The Yankees also turned a triple play on April 22, 2010, at Oakland.
