Yankees Rumors: Cubs Will Challenge Them to Sign Aroldis Chapman
Recent New York Yankees rumors have emerged about their possible interest in closer Aroldis Chapman. Will they have competition from the Chicago Cubs to sign him?
With the World Series getting ready to begin, recent New York Yankees rumors have emerged about them wanting to sign Aroldis Chapman. Prior to the MLB Trade Deadline, the Yankees made the decision to trade their closer Aroldis Chapman to the Chicago Cubs.
Due to the Yankees having an unlikely chance of reaching the postseason this season, trading Chapman who is a free agent at the end of the season made a lot of sense. The Cubs were in need of acquiring a lockdown closer like Chapman, and he has helped them reach the World Series for the first time since 1945.
This postseason, Chapman has appeared in eight games for the Cubs and has totaled a 3.38 ERA and three saves. When the postseason is over, Chapman is going to be one of the top relievers on the market, and could very well be a target of the Yankees.
According to Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe, the Yankees will be challenged by the Cubs in their quest to sign Chapman.
Aroldis Chapman, LHP, Cubs — No doubt Brian Cashman would like to get back into the hunt for Chapman after dealing him to the Cubs at the trade deadline. The one problem is the Yankees GM traded him to the Cubs, who have the resources to re-sign him.
The Cubs certainly have the resources to re-sign Chapman, and a World Series win would only help that. While Chapman will surely be set for a nice contract this offseason, the Cubs will be one of the teams that will be trying to sign him.
Having an elite closer like Chapman is almost a necessity in the postseason, as most games are close in the later innings. Chapman has proved his worth to the Cubs, and they will be one of the teams interested in him this offseason.
