Yankees pitcher mum on black eye

New York Yankees pitcher A.J. Burnett has refused to comment on why he showed up at Friday's 4-3 win against the Orioles with a black eye, the New York Post reported Saturday.

The right-hander's cheek was also bruised and swollen with a small cut and it appeared as though he had been punched.

"I understand you guys have to ask, but I'm not going to comment on it," Burnett said. "I think there's more important things going on right now with this team than my eye."

Burnett has a home in Monkton, Md., not far from Baltimore. The Baltimore County Police Department said they were unaware of any incidents involving Burnett.

"The story is he pitched well," Girardi said. "That's all we're concerned about."

Burnett's imitation of Rocky Balboa overshadowed his strong outing against the O's. Burnett went seven innings, allowing six hits, three runs and striking out five. He gave up two solo home runs, but did not unravel as he has at times this season.

He said Friday night's start was never in doubt, despite his bruised face.

"It makes me look tough," Burnett said. "It's just something I have to deal with. I dealt with it and I move on."
