With negotiations ongoing, Sal Perez says he wants to be a Royal forever
Earlier in the offseason, word broke that the Kansas City Royals were trying to rework their deal with World Series MVP Salvador Perez.
His contract is notoriously team-friendly, and the club was said to be interested in fine-tuning the contract to more accurately reflect his worth -- even though Perez said he'd be happy whether a new deal materialized or not.
In an update on the situation passed along by Sam Mellinger of The Kansas City Star this week, negotiations between the two sides appear to be going smoothly.
Perez, ever appreciative of the chance given to him by the Royals, seems interested in being a Royal for life -- as evidenced by this quote:
Perez also reiterated that he'd be content no matter what happens in negotiations, which, of course, can become contentious any time agents and a front office discuss expectations:
Mellinger adds that this conversation might be over before Opening Day, meaning Perez would be the recipient of a better contract in time for the new season to start.
That's a healthy mindset to have regarding this sort of thing, and it remains to be seen whether Perez will have to be happy no matter what or if he'll be happy because of a significant pay raise.
