Wild pitch caps wild comeback for Blue Jays in 12th inning
Sitting at third base in the 12th inning, Toronto Blue Jays second baseman Devon Travis said he visualized the perfect ending ... then capitalized when it unfolded in front of his eyes.
Travis broke for home on San Diego Padres reliever Paul Clemens' wild pitch and scored the winning run in a 7-6 comeback victory on Tuesday night in Toronto.
"I was kinda dreaming of that scenario, the opportunity to get that game-wining run on a wild pitch. I knew that guy had a really good curveball, and I'm just glad it worked out," he said.
Things definitely looked bleak for the Blue Jays before that. Matt Kemp had just hit a two-run home run for the Padres to give them a 6-4 lead heading into the bottom of the 12th inning. (Side note: That's the 24th straight game in which the Padres have homered, extending a team record. The MLB record is 27 straight games.)
Getting Travis in position to win it was an adventure for the Blue Jays.
Darwin Barney hit a one-out double to put runners on second and third when Travis came to the plate. Travis worked a 14-pitch walk to load the bases with slugger Jose Bautista coming to the plate.
Bautista drew a walk, scoring Kevin Pillar, and the Josh Donaldson hit into a fielder's choice that scored Barney (and tied the game) and left Travis on third for the decisive play.
