Wei-Yin Chen thinks Marlins will be 'very competitive'
In an introductory news conference Tuesday, Miami Marlins pitcher Wei-Yin Chen expressed his excitement to join a young, competitive team.
"I'm very excited to be here and to be part of this very young and talented team," Chen said through a translator via MLB.com. "I hope that my joining the team will make this team more competitive."
It seems like a strange statement, as Miami won just 71 games in 2015, but they are closer to competing than what's visible on the surface. Chen will join a young rotation spearheaded by Jose Fernandez and comprised of Jarred Cosart and Tom Koehler.
"I like Miami very much, and I see this team as being very competitive," Chen said. "We have a lot of young players. So I will be happy to be with all of these young players. It will make me feel like I'm still young. I want to do my best and help this team win."
In addition to the young rotation, the Marlins are anchored by superstar Giancarlo Stanton, Dee Gordon, Adeiny Hechavarria, Christian Yelich, Martin Prado and Marcell Ozuna.
Last season, Chen went 11-8 with a 3.34 ERA in 31 starts. He struck out 153 in 191 1/3 innings while walking 41.
