Watch Hyun Soo Kim get the silent treatment after his first MLB home run

The Baltimore Orioles’ offseason decision to sign South Korean slugger Hyun Soo Kim took a while to pay off with his first major league home run, and when it finally did he got a lighthearted silent treatment from his teammates.

Kim hit a solo home run to right field in the seventh inning Sunday, snapping a 4-4 tie during Baltimore’s 6-4 win in Cleveland, but his teammates initially ignored the feat – even if it was a long time in coming. Finally, they showered him with high-fives and sunflower seeds.

"I think his teammates are happier than he is," Orioles manager Buck Showalter told reporters. "He's hit a home run before."

Kim, 28, was one of the best players in the Korean Baseball Organization when he signed a two-year, $7 million deal last December. He was expected to be the team’s starting left fielder but looked lost both offensively (hitting .178) and defensively in spring training.

He refused a demotion to the minors under the terms of his contract and got only 15 at-bats in April. He was used sparingly in May, too, until he got hot during a current string of five straight starts. Kim may have only one home run after belting 28 in 141 games for the Doosan Bears last season, but he’s now hitting .386 in his first 44 major-league at-bats.

That’s nothing to keep quiet about.
