Washburn hasn't decided yet on future

It has been more than 10 months since Jarrod Washburn last threw a pitch in the major leagues, but the former 18-game winner hasn’t announced whether he plans to continue his career.

“He has not made any decisions — yet,” his agent, Scott Boras, told FOXSports.com today.

Washburn, who turns 36 next month, didn’t respond to an e-mail seeking comment.

Washburn’s status is a source of some curiosity in the game, since he remains a free agent while other teams are bidding for starters with similar track records.

In the past, Washburn indicated a preference to pitch for a team based close to his Wisconsin home. The Minnesota Twins, one such club, are currently in need of starting pitching.

Almost exactly one year ago, Washburn was sent from Seattle to Detroit in a trade that was supposed to lock up the American League Central for the Tigers. It didn’t turn out that way. Washburn won only one game while pitching on an injured left knee. The Tigers lost the division in a one-game playoff.

Washburn had offseason surgery on the knee and pronounced himself healthy. He seemed confident that he could be the pitcher he was with the Mariners in 2009: 8-6 with a 2.64 ERA in 20 starts.

But Opening Day — not to mention April, May and June — came and went without him agreeing to a contract with any club. And the wait for an answer continues today.
